Actually, I remember that game. It was Dave King who put 5 defencemen out on the power play. And he did it
because it was struggling; or rather, because it wasn't. The whole team had given up that game and didn't have any struggle left in it. Nobody was earning power play time, but King had to give it to somebody. So he sent them a message by putting out 5 D – and leaving MacInnis and Suter on the bench. (They had 7 D dressed that game.)
That PP shift was obviously not effective, but it actually wasn't much worse than the team had been showing all night. After that, they got embarrassed enough to try.
Sometimes the best coaching move is to do something out of sheer sarcasm.
