The sexualized avatars are a much bigger problem than YLYL ever was, because there's no reasonable way to avoid them. That's unfortunate both because it could make some people uncomfortable and because it could put people in awkward situations when other people see them browsing what they can only assume is some sort of adult message board.

I never would have gone into a hot women (or hot men) pictures thread at work, but I've had people walk by my desk while borderline NSFW avatars are on the screen, and I can't help but wonder what they think of me. I don't have a problem with Eastern Girl's (isn't that Regehr?), but peanut's bare ass shot and probably shawnski's and papi's are too much.

On topic, though, I think closing the thread was the right decision. I never had a problem with the YLYL thread, but whatever enjoyment anyone got out of it is easily outweighed by the fact that it made this place less welcoming to half of the population. Good job, mods.

Okay, but why is the term sisters invoked as opposed to brothers or boys if not to deliberately feminize them?

Because we know they are brothers and that would be stating the obvious? Is there any doubt the term isn't used to deliberately feminize them?

Sorry, I wasn't intending to challenge your post specifically, but to reinforce the point that there is no right here to be entitled to certain topics/behaviours/attitudes. I was essentially agreeing with you, but didn't make that entirely clear.

It would seem to me, that the new modus operandi going forward will be no objectifying/derogatory posts towards either sex. We'll see how that evolves as I expect it to take considerable time.
I obviously cannot speak for the mods, but I've been around similar forums and similar debates long enough to know that in most cases, black and white morality is neither desirable nor enforceable. The line, whether we like it or not, does move slightly and usually depends on context. Some allowance for human nature is to be expected.

Okay, so call them the pony twins or whatever. Why is it necessary to use a feminine label to insult them?

Because nothing insults a heterosexual man more than questioning his manhood?

Well that's my point. If you're feminizing someone as insult, it portrays that you hold femininity and women in less regard than men and masculinity.

The mods must absolutely continue this crusade of inequality that they started by deleting the YLYL thread. They now need to force others with inappropriate avatars to change them immediately. Why wait? My suggestion to you instead of being a hypocrite by now applying our argument against us (which obviously didnt work) would be to remove it voluntarily.
That first sentence was sarcasm. Just giving back the same tired stuff I heard repeatedly before. Taste of your own medicine or some such thing.

Crusade of inequality? First of all, it would be a crusade for equality. We are trying to be inclusive, not exclusive. Doesn't matter though, because it's not a crusade. Please don't paint our desire to want less sexism on the board as though we are all hoping the board turns into a great place to talk about paint drying.

I don't think I am being a hypocrite. I expressed my opinions about a thread on the board, not anyone's avatar. I will take down my topless oily Regehr if all the guys with boob/ass avatars take theirs down. I don't personally feel that's necessary that we all take our avatars down, however if the mods decide that's fair and in line with community expectations, I will do so.

I do have concerns about this decision.

I had no particular attachment to the thread in question but I do think there are slippery slope and censorship issues here.

I will be very curious to see what direction things go from here on out.

I do have a particular attachment to Calgarypuck... I've been a member for over 11 years. I hope this decision enhances the community rather than diminishing it.

No doubt. I'm assuming we will see the end of insulting the women of Edmonton as well. The way they are mocked is more offensive than 90% of went on in YLYL or the rest of the site in general. Also this is presumably the end of avatars of scantily clad women... or men.

What's the origin of the pony thing? I aways assumed it was because only women and gay guys like ponies, so that's what made it hilarious. I'm curious though, so please correct me if there's a non-sexist/homophobic meaning that I'm missing.

I'm not really that upset at the YLYL thread getting closed (though I obviously didn't agree with it) but 'Sedin Sisters' becoming an offensive phrase is exactly the slippery slope people were talking about.
really i find the "sedin sister" comment a lot worse than the YLYL thread and the pictures.

a comment like that is brutal in that giving someone or something a feminine linkage with the intent to be derogatory says so much about the view on women themselves. That's a lot worse than that thread in my opinion.

I don't know. I never made up the moniker nor do I use it. That said I also don't care if anyone chooses to use it as I'm not one of those that chooses to inflict my will upon others. I have more going on in my life to worry about trivial things like this.

Ugh. Because they play like girls. Non-physical, no fighting, no hitting. Which is how women's hockey is played. And why women don't play in the NHL. So sexist.

I always thought it was a beastiality thing. Kind of like New Zealanders and Sheep.

And the other side of the ponies is calling them babies as little kids (not just girls) like ponies.

I didn't see that was as sexist or homophobic.

As for the women of edmonton they should continue to be insulted in the same way we insult the men of edmonton. It might be insensitive but it isn't sexist.

See, this is what I'm worried about. Every comment in CalgaryPuck being scrutinized for any possible negative connotation towards anyone because it might offend someone.
