(a) He's a favourite for the job so they're posting his just in case
(b) He's getting the TV gig
(c) They told him he's not getting the play-by-play job so he's moving on

It was a one year contract for Pete. He could easily be back next season.

How many are linked to the team as closely as the now-retired radio play-by-play voice, Peter Maher?
Not many, pointed out former general manager Al Coates.
"Without question, when you say Calgary Flames, and play the word-association game, you think of Peter Maher," Coates said during Thursday's retirement dinner for Maher at the Calgary Italian Club.

"I'm so sad Peter Maher never got to call another Stanley Cup victory," said former defenceman Rhett Warrener, harkening to the team's 2004 run, which fell one goal short. "I've always felt the need to apologize to him for that."

Maher will be honoured by the Flames on Nov. 18, when they play host to the Anaheim Ducks, but Thursday's event was a chance for a small part of the countless people wanting to give their best wishes.
On hand were the likes of his long-time colour analyst, Doug Barkley, former Flames Mike Vernon, Jim Peplinski and Joel Otto, and president Ken King, plus many in the media world and business community blessed to be part of the living legend's life.
By video, tributes came in from the team's all-time leading scorer, Jarome Iginla, Terry Crisp, the coach of the '89 Stanley Cup team, and Maher's counterparts Bob Miller, who calls games for the Los Angeles Kings, and Toronto Maple Leafs play-by-play voice Joe Bowen.

For his part, Maher made a point to tell fans to welcome the new radio voice on Sportsnet 960 the FAN, Derek Wills, who was on-hand and knows all-too-well whose shoes he'll be filling.

"Among the many things I'll miss is my mingling with the fans in the upper level of the Saddledome in the intermissions when I'd check the plumbing," said the man whose charitable endeavours include being the honorary chairman for the Alzheimer Society of Calgary's Thanksgiving Memory Walk and Run.
"Now, I move onto the next period of my life and put this in the win column," Maher said.

Though I'm forced to watch sportsnet for hockey for the next 12 years, I will never forgive them for forcing Maher to retire because of money. he had a couple of good years left.

I'd rather people say it if that's what they're hearing. That's two posters on this page that claim to have heard that. Obviously that doesn't validate it, but I wouldn't be surprised.

Maher's voice and ability to animate a game was there up until the end but he wasn't as precise or accurate in his game call in the last couple of years. However, he is a legend and I really hope his choice to leave was of his own volition.

I'll never forget the time I thanked Peter for the 30 years of service while he was just trying to pass some water in the way, WAY upper level washrooms. The guy was an incredible talent, and his willingness to put up with the gushing drunks (like myself) means he was an even better person.
