Man...racking my brain over this one. Sooooo many movies. I can definitely think of a few that, when they're on TV, I almost have no choice but to watch it through:

- The Matrix
- V for Vendetta
- Star Trek (XI)
- Jurassic Park
- Ace Ventura (came to top of mind because it was on the other night, and I can apparently still almost recite it word for word)

I can be in the mood to watch any of those movies at any time.

It's a relentless action/horror movie and there's really nothing else like it that's been done in such high quality. I've seen it so many times I can't even count and it never loses it's luster as even the queen alien effects hold up well today. To me it's like Raiders of the Lost Ark where it's the very definition of the perfect popcorn movie where you sit in your chair and are entertained from opening credits to closing credits. I know neither are the most cerebral of movies but I don't believe a "best" movie has to be a drama or contain Oscar worthy performances as the main goal is to be entertained and few movies have done that better than Aliens or Raiders of the Lost Ark.

I have a real soft spot for older films with insanely good SFX.

I'm glad that I'm not the only person that believes John Carpenter's The Thing is a masterpiece. It doesn't quite make my top 5 but it's maybe my favorite ever straight horror movie as the effects were way ahead of it's time. I opted Aliens over Alien but Alien is right there in my top 10 as it's such a well done movie. I haven't seen the Fly for a while but it's IMO Jeff Goldblum's best acting job. I've seen both versions of Oldboy and the original is far superior but to me it goes a little off the rails at the end.

Yeah, the thought crossed my mind too. It's hard to really weigh it as a movie, but the density of funny and really funny jokes in it is unsurpassed. So hard to pick a favorite gag... wrong day to quit xxx; drinking problem; little breather; jive old lady; every one of johnny's lines which, despite the gay stereotypes, weren't mean-spirited.

Gladiator is fine. It's a popcorn flick that has a bit of gravitas to it. It shouldn't however be considered better than every other film ever made. So much so that you couldn't possibly list another movie that would be nearly as good. That post was terrible. Where is that handle to thank his post when you need it?

Plus, it's just a rehash of Spartacus which is a Kubrick film, therefore better already right there.
