I do find it odd that they replaced Ribeiro with Gagner, however. Silly trade by Edmonton, slight headscratcher for Phoenix, but brilliance by Yzerman!

I'm surprised that Gagner's value is that low. I know he is overpaid a little, but he is a 24 year old player good for about 40 points over a season.

I can't believe his value as a cap dump was a 6th

My koolaid drinking brother said Purcell is feisty. Sounds like it comes right from Stauffer

Bad management. Bob Nicholson can't start cleaning house fast enough.

After 2 years if speculation on the return gagne was to net I'm amazed that someone had to add another roster player to him for a 6th rounder.

Think of Purcells value around the league. I'm sure Tampa offered up to the coyotes with from been for the same late pick and the coyotes said no. So they had to find a way to get something the coyotes would be willing to give up a sixth rounder for.

Calgary puck just being Calgary puck!

Decent move on the oilers front, Purcell being cut short by most people around here. Had extremely good possession stats over the years.

More from HF...

I don't like this deal, but that's no surprise. There was no way I was going to be satisfied based on what we were rumoured to be considering for him at the deadline.

We got bigger, but we certainly didn't get better, younger, or cheaper. Not entirely true, I suppose...we save $300K.

I was thinking the same thing. It only took 7 years for a former 3rd overall to be worth a 6th round pick

Exhibit A on why Oilers fans will always be Oilers fans;

Quote:
Funny how those morons at CP are praising Yzerman when the only thing he got was a 6th round pick and some cap room.
It appears those "morons" at CP at least understand why the Lightning made this deal and why it turned out great for them. What they fail to realize is that the Lightning would have bought out Percell if they couldn't make the Ganger trade so the Oilers gave up Gagner for a player that was going to available on free agency at very likely a lesser deal than the bloated one the Lightning wanted to buy out. They don't realize that the plan for the Lightning was always just to unload Percell for cap room. They didn't want Gagner on that deal any more than the 28 other teams outside of the Coyotes.

Tampa clearing room for a winger? Maybe Vanek or Cammelleri.

It was Yzerman who put Purcell's trade value at 0, not Calgarypuck.

This trade also provides a valuable preview for what Yakupov will be worth in about two years, assuming he isn't in the KHL by then

Jumping to conclusions way to fast.
