Well Liverpool are a Pot 3 team for CL, so getting out of the group stages will be very difficult with our without him.
That's kind of beside my point anyway. I have no issue with the length of his ban for Liverpool. When you bite someone for a third time, the punishment needs to be harsh. Taking CL games away from him is probably the harshest thing you can do to him, so I'm fine with that.
If anything, I would have thought his ban for Uruguay would have been longer since he was playing for them when it occurred.

It still doesn't help Italy who are on a plane home. FIFA really should have kicked the whole team out especially after comments from coach and captain
captain Lugano: "Chiellini is less of a man for crying and photoshoping pictures"
coach Tavares: "This is a football tournament, not a place for morality"
If Suarez had been biting Chiellini while scoring the winning goal and having sex with Blatter's wife, then maybe. Otherwise its really retroactive punishment for a foul, theres no sense in punishing all of the Uruguayan team for the deeds of one player.

10v10 is totally different.
And what about the Uruguay player who is trying to grab Chiellini's shirt back on to cover the exposed shoulder.
and what about post game comments calling the Italians cheats (i know i know), Uruguay is totally going to bash FIFA today for picking on the little.
Sure we don't like Italy but I would say this whoever the victim was. Actually if the US got eliminated this way, it would kill soccer in the states forever.
There is precedent for punhsing teams. Teams get kicked out for using ineligable players or overaged players. A Chilean goalkeeper once faked his own assault (cut himself with a razorblade) and Chile was suspended for both 90 and 94 world cups.

True, but we're also talking about 10 v 10 for approximately 10 minutes and even then its a guessing game. Still, I dont think theres any grounds for punishing the whole team.

I guess I idiotically assumed FIFA would have some balls and actually suspended him for 9 World Cup matches, but no it's 9 international matches so basically a 1-game suspension from Uruguay (and a bunch of meaningless friendlies) and Liverpool does indeed eat it the worst. So yeah I cann see why their fans aren't pleased.
I'm fairly sure friendlies don't count. It'll be Copa America and the start of qualifying for the next World Cup.
There is also that Copa America Centenario in 2016. Assuming he's still representing Uruguay and not in jail
Good point. I thought that was the next Copa but there is the normal one in 2015 and then the one in the US in 2016. If their World Cup qualifying works the same as this time it starts in October 2015 so his ban is likely to include:
1 or 2 games in this World Cup
4 or 6 games in the 2015 Copa America
up to 4 World Cup 2018 qualifying games (Oct-Nov 2015)
maybe a game or two of the 2016 Copa America
Dunno, I would assume they would given that they count towards rankings. They are official games.
Friendlies do count towards FIFA rankings, but they aren't are considered less than proper competitions - you aren't committed to a country by playing a friendly for example. When Canadian striker Olivier Occean got a 6 game ban during World Cup Qualifying in 2012 friendlies didn't count, he had to serve it during the Gold Cup in 2013.
Of course, it's FIFA, they can and do make up the rules as they go. If I remember correctly Christine Sinclair was allowed to serve her 4 game ban picked up during the Olympics during friendlies as Canada didn't have any official competitions available until the Womens World Cup (as hosts we didn't have any qualifying games).

But that would mean that Uruguay have to name him to the 23-man squad. Would they name a player for the 2015 Copa America and not be able to use him at all just so he can knock games off the suspension?

I think the Suarez ban is pretty good. It will hurt his iternational team, and his club team. Liverpool could be out of the race in the premier league and Champs league by the time Sauarez is back and in match fit form.
The fact that his absense directly hurts both teams will hurt his overall reputation, not only on those teams, but for other teams interested in his services. I think the suspension does more harm to him than just the games missed seem to suggest. He's effectively let down all of his teammates, everywhere.

How often does the 23rd man actually play? I would do it.
It seems odd that the ban impacts his club. Would a suspended hockey player at the Olympics get banned from the NHL?
No, but I think you have to look at it more in line almost like the substance-abuse program.
If a player went to the Olympics and did drugs or something else inappropriate, he'd be required to be cleared through the program.
Obviously this isnt substance abuse, but it is a 'foul' that exceeds the purview of the game. It isnt like a really bad tackle, its basically assault, so the punishment has to be more far-reaching.

I would be livid if I was a Liverpool fan... but I'm not so haha!

Its actually a bit of a two-way street. Liverpool obviously never wanted to sell him, and that ship has now likely sailed.
Losing him for a lot of matches does suck, but really, thats nothing that anyone can do anything about and Sturridge and some of the new signings will have to carry the mail for a bit.
But, when he comes back from suspension, if he puts together a season similar to last year and goes without biting anyone its hard to complain. Hes crazy, but hes incredibly good.

The Olympics are a separate organization from the NHL, which in turn is an independent organization that only answers to itself.
In soccer everybody ultimately answers to FIFA. (Who have the power to shut countries and players out of essentially all the biggest soccer tournaments.)
