Odd move to make for cap considerations 3 years down the road.

Quicker up front? Umberger is slow as molasses in January.

Not like the Flyers to make moves with an eye to the future. Then again the Flyers seem to operate differently than the other 29 teams in the NHL so even though on the surface I think it's not a very good deal there's nothing that franchise can do that would surprise me.

All I've done for the past 10 minutes is stare at this and shake my head. What a terrible, terrible trade.

Hartnell was a hear and soul guy, hes the kind of guy that you need to win in the playoffs, this seems stupid.
Granted, his contract was atrocious.

Flyers have an affinity for pulling headscratching deals on June 23rd:

Richards, Carter, Van Riemsdyk, and now Hartnell all traded on June 23rd.

Now this is interesting:
James Mirtle @mirtle
Talk going around is Scott Hartnell requested Flyers trade him. Has no-movement clause.

Makes me wonder how many options Philly had. Rock and a hard place.

Something must've happened behind the scenes to make him change his mind. He had just completed year 1 of a new 6 year deal.

The thing with Hartnell, is that he has a lot of hard mileage on his body. He's going to fall to pieces in short order here. Good return for the Jackets for Umberger, but in time that Hartnell contract is going to be tough to swallow.

CBJ wins in the near term, but those last couple years on Hartnell's contract are potential buyout years.
I guess Edmonton isn't getting Umberger for Gagner. Edmonton is no good.

This is a huge lift off #CBJ GM Kekalainen. Club was contemplating a compliance buyout on Umberger if they couldn't move him before draft.
Aaron Portzline@Aportzline · 8m
#CBJ GM Jarmo Kekalainen had a long talk with Scott Hartnell on Sunday, detailing for him the direction of the Blue Jackets' organization.
Aaron Portzline@Aportzline · 7m
Kekalainen on Hartnell: "He said 'I'm 32 years old. I have plenty of money. What I want to do more than anything now is win."
Aaron Portzline@Aportzline · 7m
Hartnell must have liked what Kekalainen said. He phoned #CBJ GM this morning to say he was waving his no-move clause, coming to Columbus.

I like this deal for Columbus. Worse players than Hartnell are making 4.7 million. It's gonna really hard to make the playoffs in the west, if other teams in the conference keep making smart moves.

Hmmm. Nice to see a GM out of Philadelphia actually thinking long-term. the Jackets win in the short-term (Hartnell is the better player) but Philly will be better off in the end. Win-Win trade IMO.

Hartnell hasn't been great since he had that major injury at the end last or the start of the season that's just finished.

I like it.

How does it diminish the logjam at centre?
Puzzling move by Philly. Why not just move him out for picks to a team that needs to hit the floor rather than taking on Umberger? Or an expiring contract?
