I don;t think its movies or video games or heavy metal music, it is the glorification of these guys after the fact. Before this no one gave a crap whether this tit lived or died, now everyone knows his name. To him and his ilk, he has already won.

Yep, I agree. Seems so obvious that this is the problem. So many of these guys, if not all of them are in that teen-early twenties age range where there seems to be a such a desire to be some kind of important, grand person. It seems like a tough task to reel in the media on this, but it seems they should take some responsibility on it themselves. They do it with suicides, why shouldn't this kind of thing be treated the same. The Sandy Hook guy, California guy, Boston bombers were all turned into almost household names.
These stories are just not that important, that they have to consume the news outlets for weeks. Many, many more, good, young, innocent people die tragic deaths across North America every day without us knowing about it. Social media is harder to do something about, but I'd guess if the regular media was more low key about these, the social media stuff would be lower key too.

Heard on the radio that the original 911 call was a setup, basically the RCMP walked into an ambush. Anyone else hear anything about it? It was on CBC radio 2 around 9.
Hopefully the updates are true and they have narrowed down his location. Hoping no one else is involved at this point in time.

do they have to release the name at first to try and get information? shocked friends, family members, acquaintences might give info. plus to know that he's a local guy helps.

As much as I'd love to hide the name and prevent these guys from getting glory, it's practically impossible to do since a lot of these killers have some form of social media presence, or someone knows him. Hell, even I linked to an article that had his name (my apologies if that offended anyone).
And remember, it's not just the police-hating gun toters. The Calgarian guy who just suicide bombed in Iraq? This guy had a LinkedIn profile - publicly available and gave a lot of details about his work and school history. The media was all over it, and the Imams and community members who knew him spoke openly on camera.
You're going to have to put the kybosh on two tiers of "name whistleblowers" - the family/friends/acquaintances that knew him, and the media who dig up every last detail and go through lengths to make that happen.
Idealistic, but not realistic in today's society.

Following along on the Calgary Herald site, looks like they have him in a building (some have named it, I will not to protect police). Parking lot has been cleared, 5 snipers in place and on loud speaker asking them to exit the building.

Not sure if this was answered, but is it an abandoned building? Are there civilians in it?

In general, I agree. In this specific case, that is not practical as he is still at large, and there was a definite public safety need to get his name and picture out there.

From what I have seen/heard, it is not a building that you would believe to be abandoned. It would be somewhere that you would have civilians. No idea if there are any or not though. There seems to be a number of civilians in the area that police seem to have moved.

I'd rather he rot in a box for 50 years.

That wouldn't be my bet. Most of these situations seem to end with the police cornering the guy and him either surrendering or, more likely, him taking his own life.

I don't disagree, but I also don't agree.
I don't want to waste money/resources on a clown like this guy.

We are not the USofA, life still has value even if crimes are committed. I hope no one further is injured and this guy is arrested and goes through due process.

Looks like there were civilians in the building who have exited as per a reporter for Global Halifax.

Maybe it's because you called him a clown, but a Killing Joke reference seems appropriate here. Especially in the case of a guy who executed 3 cops, it becomes that much more important to bring him in alive, make him stand trial and answer for his crimes. He has to be proven wrong. Our society, our law enforcement, has to prove that our way works. That it's undeniably better.
All killing this guy does is give more ammunition to the anti-cop anti-authority fringe.
