That's my entire point. Apparently in the eyes of many Ekblad is no more of a stud than any of the other three guys at the top so there is no point spending a 2nd round pick to grab him when you're going to get a quality blue chip prospect at #4 anyway, and then still be able to "throw some mud" with the 34th overall.

I think that just before the draft is the worse time to be acquiring draft picks. They are way overvalued at this time.

Ekblad is a stud. He may not be Seth Jones, but he would be the best defensive prospect we've had in 20 years.

Isn't this what Edmonton has done for years?

What, addressing their dire need for small, skilled wingers with no defensive game?

Not really. By in large they've spent their time drafting flashy scoring wingers and ignoring how to build a good hockey team.

Hall over Seguin
Yakupov over Galchenyuk and Murray
Paajarvi over Ellis, de Haan and Kulikov

The only time they picked "right", was RNH - but even then, they rushed RNH to the NHL and in hindsight did pass over a bonafide leader in Landeskog.

...I guess what I'm saying is that Edmonton really sucks at drafting and are even worse at developing. While they've been making the wrong choices with their 1st overall picks for years, their depth drafting has been even worse. So no...I'd say that's not what Edmonton has been doing.

or something along those lines. (i.e. other players plus picks)

Combine assets with another #5-10 team. They go up to 4th OA, Flames go up to 1st OA, Panthers drop down and get picks/players.
I cannot see Vancouver giving up Hansen to move up 2 spots.

Why wouldn't they just give up Hansen and the 36th OA and jump right to the #1, bypassing the Flames? (sure, the 36th isn't quite as good as the 34th, so throw in a 5th rounder or something if necessary)

I agree the proposal isn't quite right. That's why I said something along those lines.

The thought process is neither the Flames nor a team in the 6-10 range wants to pay the full price of going up to #1.

In a win win win scenario, the Flames and the other team combine assets. The Flames move to #1. The other team upgrades their pick. The Panthers get what they want.

Far to much. If Bennett is available at #2 I wouldn't have a problem if the flames traded #4 and one of the second round picks. Obviously Buffalo would have to come down on their asking price.

I wouldn't do a hypothetical trade of Reinhart + MacInnis for Ekblad.

If Ryan MacInnis' father wasn't Al nobody would be taking about him as a 2nd rounder.

Burke/Treliving to do a replay of the 1999 draft and pick up the Sam twins?

Fine.

I wouldn't trade Reinhart + Scherbak for Ekblad.

I don't know who Scherbak's dad is.

I'll bet we end up with the #1 pick and get Ekblad.

That's my gut feeling as well. I'm assuming that the rumors of the Flames 'working hard' to trade up to #1 and get Ekblad are true - which would mean that Burke/Treliving really wants him, and are willing to give up what it takes.

Roof-Daddy will probably faint with rage.

Haha

Naw, not a chance.

I have my opinions, but in the end they are considerably uneducated when compared to the Flames management and scouting staff.

In the end, whatever the Flames decide to do, I will take a wait and see approach because it will be years before any body can rightfully claim the proper decisions were made, or the right players were picked.

And thats why Burke went out and got an extra second and third round pick in this years draft. ammunition in the chamber in case an opportunity came up to use them to move up.

I'm totally fine if they stay at 4 and make their pick. But I also cannot discount the possibility that those extra picks will come in handy if they feel THEIR guy is worth moving up to grab.

Today I really want the Flames to take Draisaitl. Which is a good reason to stand pat at 4 and hope one of the Sams or Leon is there. But if they want Ekblad, they're going to have to trade up past Edmonton to get him.
