I agree, but what else would we be willing to offer? Not much more IMO.
Also remember they have Snow and Wang running the show there. They're clueless!!! Lol

Why this year's pick? They should trade next year's if they really believe the immediate help is going to help. They are just going to devalue the 2015 pick with their awesomeness. A GM would pay a ransom for NYI 1st in 2015

"Indications are that the Isles are going to keep the pick and draft a player, unless they trade it for a different player."

I don't think the right pieces can be moved to get this done, it would take Gio+. The Canucks, with their older veterans are a much better trading partner. Something like the sisters for the 5th and Reinhart would be a good deal for both teams. Or Ovechkin for the 5th and Okposo. Trading any top 5 pick for "immediate help" = blockbuster, in any draft class.

This looks like a situation a team in a re-tool mentality could take advantage of - like the Canucks moving out Kesler or Edler as part of a deal, or the Jets moving Kane.
The best piece that Calgary could move, outside of the ridiculous idea of moving Gio, would be Hudler, but he is not in the same level as those guys. Maybe this is a deal Carolina could jump on, moving Ward ++
The flames do not have enough high level talent to make a move like this

Why don't the Islanders trade the pick for a competent assistant GM from another team that can replace the clown in charge and in the future ensure that the organization doesn't have to go through the predicament of a bottom 5 team in the league losing a 1st round pick for a rental player ever again?
Honestly has that ever happened? A bottom 5 team trading a 1st round (top 5) pick for a rental player? How does Garth Snow still have a job in the NHL?

It was a risk for sure, but once Taveres got hurt, their season was over. I do respect that Snow went out and got someone to play with JT but they never clicked. Also thought they would have gotten more when they traded Vanek away, I think Snow thought the same, like just flip him for another 1st if it doesn't work out.

Ottawa narrowly avoided the same thing this year. It took a little run at the end of the season to miss this.

The major flaw in the deal was Moulson going back with the 1st round pick. You don't do 1st line player for player swaps and expect to gain substantially even if you are getting the better player as all you are gaining is the net difference in point between the two players which was 15 points. Snow basically gave up a 1st round pick for an extra 15 points in individual scoring. Terrible trade.

JT and Vanek clicked just fine. Vanek played at a PPG clip with JT ... their top line was never the problem, but a lack of secondary scoring and questionable defending and goaltending. Snows ultimate downfall was that Vanek never intended to re-sign there.

Something involving Cam Ward actually makes a lot of sense. The Islanders biggest problem is goaltending and Ward could definitely help with that.

You guys are right, dumb trade. Now do they give this years or next years to Buffalo. I'm sure they hope to finish higher in the standings next year, but what is the smart thing to do.

I see no way they give this year's pick to Buffalo ... you just can't give up a top 5 to fulfill a condition. I mean - what kind of message does that send to your fans? "We know we are bad, but we actually expect to be even worse next year?" That's horrible, you can't do that to your fanbase. Plus they eventually need to win if they want to be successful in Brooklyn ... and who knows, at one point JT could have enough of all the losing. Firing both Snow and Capuano, trading this year's pick for immediate help and trying to be as good as possible in 2014-15 is the only card they have left to play IMO.

There is no indication that the Canucks intend to even begin rebuilding. In fact, the efforts to get people to retain season tickets argues that they intend to retool and give it another shot at trying to be competitive.

|
True, but for a top-five pick, those veterans would be in the 26-28 range with long-term contracts, not 30-33 range with a year or two left. From the Flames, the only real exception I can see is Gio, and that is not something Burke would consider.

E.Kane+ for the 5th overall makes most sense to me. He would light it up with JT

Don't think Winnipeg does it, they would want more immediate help than the 5th overall pick can provide in return for Kane. Jets will be under a lot of pressure to get to the playoffs next season.

back on topic I would do Hudler+Sven

Nah, we gotta quit devaluing the Flames value. It's trending up.

So glad lots of these people are not Flames GM. Sven and Hudler? For someone completely unproven? Sven has shown nothing but great promise, and Hudler is a proven veteran with skill. Some people I tell ya

Is that rumor about Edmonton trading their pick for a defenseman that's developed already? G. Reinhart for their 3rd overall pick? If they did that, they'd be willing to give Buffalo the 5th overall.
Not a fair trade for Edmonton, but it's Edmonton.. They'd probably do it and call it the trade of the decade. their 3rd for G. Reinhart is an overpayment.
