In less funny news they just tested a bunch of ballistic missiles in contravention of Security Council resolutions.

Great way to keep your readiness up to a high level.

Heck when I was in the military we were in total fear of the Fulda Gap. We expected Soviet Tanks to come streaming through every day.

If NK ever crossed the border they could do a quick dash for Soeul and then would be slaughtered.

Their kit is so old...it would be more lopsided than Iraq.

China probably enjoys their ability to keep everything off kilter. Some day they may even be useful to China, if only as a divergent or misdirection. Strike that, they already cause enough problems that make China look good in comparison.

Ours (Canada). during the end of the cold war.

The Fulda Gap was the principle point of battle in any theoretical invasion by the Soviets which is why at one point NATO had 50 divisions of troops and tanks and massed artillery staged to defend it

At one point the American's had mined it with nuclear demolition charges

The Soviets primary strike group was their 8th army which included 6 armored regiments and a armored brigade, 10 motor vehicle regiments, 5 artillary regiments and attached air force and specialty units.

The 8th army was the vanguard. The Soviets employed operational maneuver groups behind it to push through any breach caused by the 8th army to attack Nato's rear. usually the OMG at the time consisted of two armies

A tank regiment had up to 200 tanks
iirc a Russian Motor Vehicle battalion had a least one one tank regiment as well. I'm foggy on org charts.

So the Russians would have had between 1200 and 1500 heavy tank formations in their vanguard army right off of the spot with another 3000 coming in behind them.

So yeah, that little piece of real estate was the lynch pin to hell.

North Korea wouldn't even need to scoot to Seoul. They would just plaster it with massed artillery.

They would probably also want to attack in the winter time.

More weapons support then anything else. Syria, Iran would supply weapons up to and including chemical weapons.

But there's no doubt that North Korea would lose. the question is how much damage is South Korea willing to take to their civilian and industrial bases to win that war.

Tanks at a safe distance can drive right through a radioactive zone in theory.

And yes those exist.

They weren't huge weapons at about a 10 kiloton yield, but they would certainly rip the heart out of a armored column and make it very tough to fight in.

From the same article

Quote:
The report could not be confirmed, although previous executions have suggested that the North Korean leadership can be inventive when it comes to disposing of anyone who has fallen out of favour. In 2012, a vice-minister of the army was executed with a mortar round for reportedly drinking and carousing during the official mourning period after Kim Jong-il’s death in December of the previous year.
On the orders of Kim Jong-un to leave “no trace of him behind, down to his hair”, Kim Chol was forced to stand on a spot that had been targeted for a mortar round and “obliterated”, South Korean media reported.
