I agree, we aren't exactly comparing elite combo's. But I do feel like Edmonton's goaltending is better today, and tomorrow when just looking at those 4 players in question.

I like our up and comers better than theirs, and maybe that's all that really matters.

Honestly I think they'd be better off taking the hurt for one year than dealing with a 3M penalty for 3 years. But most likely he retires in 2018, no? Isn't that how the contract was designed? I forget.

Actual salary is $6.714 for next 4 years, 15% of which is just over $1M. As well, Bob McKenzie confirmed that the retained salary averages $1M for the first 4 years.

I agree that it should go down substantially after that, by which time Lou will have retired anyways.

Let's not lose sight of the bigger picture by haggling over the details. The Canucks are a train wreck, and Gillis is either the 29th or 30th best GM in the league right now.

Yep....you missed a lock out, half a season lost, slow bargaining sessions and a new CBA.....and we traded Iggy.

Just kidding.....it's new stuff

I think 2018 or 2019

the last 3 years are when it's basically 1m in cash per season, the 2018/19 season he still makes 3.4 so he could stick for that one

Makes sense. Does the retained cap hit also vary or is it 795 every year?

I understand the urge to gloat and dance around the grave of the rival as a flames fan, but not being one I'd rather analyze the situation from an actual hockey perspective. Gillis has completely bungled the goalie situation since last year, but if you took over the GM job in Vancouver this morning you couldn't have done better than this trade. It's a useful NHL player and a guy who may or may not start for you in the future, in exchange for a guy who had zero value left to the organization if it's going into a rebuild. The fact that he got more than a 2nd rounder is surprising to me.

Lack and Markstrom are NOT better than Scrivens and Fasth (and I am no fan of the latter group)

Lack has played well - as a backup with no pressure, on a good team.

Markstrom has done nothing (though he has been on a bad team)

Just wait until Lack has the weight of the team on his shoulders. And if Markstrom plays in front of Nuck fans the way he has been playing in Fla, Nuck fans will crucify him.

This time last year Vancouver had a top 5 goaltending tandem.. Gillis is a moron for trading Schneider.

What do Panthers fans think of this deal? Has anyone asked either of them?

They don't have the interweb at the retirement community.

It is absolutely incredible how quickly the Canucks have crumbled from 'glory'.

It was only two years ago that Nuck fans were bragging about one of the deepest cores, best goalie tandems, and deepest defensive groups in the NHL. All at a decently young age, and with a bunch of home town discounts.

Two years later they are in full rebuild, with a high payroll, and little in the prospect cupboard

Haven't you always argued that Luo was at least a top 10, if not a top 5, goalie?

As a Panthers fan, this is a really bad trade for the Canucks. Markstrom has talent, but he can't seem to figure it out. Mathias is filler.

Totally true that it's impossible to judge a goalie until he's been a starter for a season. But I think Lack will at least end up being an average NHL goalie, which isn't nothing. Who the hell knows what Markstrom ends up being but he does have a high ceiling. I wouldn't be surprised to see Markstrom get s**t on by fickle Vancouver bandwagoners who somehow decided that Luongo was their favourite guy after all, even after destroying him for years. Rogers Arena is an insane asylum.

At least the door slammed shut in their face. The pain the Flames endured trying desparately to prop the tiniest crack in their door open was not helpful.

Very sad that the Nucks are being forced to accept a quick death on this version of the team, was hoping they'd let it linger a few more seasons and do some more damage like we did before accepting their fate.

It's an interesting dynamic. Of those four, I would rank Lack as the best, but Markstrom as the worst, and by a fair margin. Hell, I'd take Berra over Markstrom (and obviously that places Ramo well above him too). It's pretty amazing to see just how little Gillis turned Schneider and Luongo into, even accounting for the fact that goalies don't get the same prices.

What is really interesting about this is how it affects Kesler's trade. Gillis shot for the moon on Luongo, and ended up crashing as badly as a North Korean rocket. Will he try the same with Kesler, or will he play it safer now and aim a little lower?
