Didn't like Bullock for the role she played in the movie. I have always viewed Bullock as being an actress in comedy roles and could never get used to seeing her in a serious role. She wasn't convincing for me in her role and that took away from what was otherwise a great movie script.
So in other words it's not Bullock's problem it's yours. I don't think she had to convince you as you just stated nothing she could do would change your view. She was great in Gravity and fully deserving of her nomination. Get over it.
I have't seen Gravity yet, but why do people hate on it so much?
It's the same irrational hate people have for Apple, Microsoft, etc. Some people loathe anything competently successful that isn't their personal choice. They hate that it's successful despite their dislike for it. That and the typical anti-Clooney and Bullock nonsense and it's not hard to fathom why some people "hate" it.
It's a fantastic movie and well worth all the acclaim. I saw it in theatres and I'm not sure if it will transfer as well to home video because it's such a visual film. Was a great theatrical experience though.

Even though I cheered for Nebraska, I am really p...d that American Hustle didn't win anything at all. Great movie all around. The only consolation - Gravity did not win for Best Picture. But Best Director??? Are you kidding me??!... Disappointed and grumpy...
I was coming on here to post how I was happy to see that American Hustle didn't win a single award. Most over-rated movie I've seen in a long time. Vapid plot and forgettable characters. Shouldn't even have been nominated in my opinion.

Personally, I find it a joke that Jason Statham does not yet have an oscar, much less a nomination.....one day these guys will see the error of their ways.
LMAO… ok then.

did McConaughey just have the most impressive acting year of all time? Between Mud, Dallas Buyers, True Detective and a great cameo in The wolf of Wall Street (I guess Mud might be pre 2013, but still...)

Without giving you an alternative, as none springs immediately to mind, I seriously doubt it. Great year though.
EDIT: It occurs to me that Pacino did Glengarry Glen Ross and Scent of a Woman in the same year.

In 2002 John C Reily was in 3 of the then only 5 nominated Best Picture films. Obviously not the lead guy though.
re: Ellen
I just thought she got in the way. One of the best hosts recently was John Stewart, he had his jokes at the top and for the most part just did intros with little gags or skits along the way. Ellen's bits were awful, walking around for a couple minutes aimlessly, "who wants pizza!" ...silence....
What was the bit with the guitar after the music performance? Did she think the audience would crack up because she introduced a presenter sitting down with a guitar like the guy singing before her did? Lame lame lame.
How can you say something is the "best" when assessing art? Getting upset about who did or did not win an Oscar, is like getting upset about who won ice dancing (or a Grammy).
^Hah, that's more a problem with ice dancing as a sport than anything else, but I guess you're sort of right. I still still say it's totally reasonable to object to who did or didn't win.
The reason people get upset is because it's obvious there is a certain standard of norms, which is why you don't see, oh I don't know... Jason Statham nominated for Oscars. There's a sort of vague consensus as to who the best actors (or whatever category) in a given year, and the fine details that allow you to choose between them are of course personal, but informed by your own tastes, experience and ability to differentiate the performances. So it's only partly subjective.
When people scorn a selection that differs from theirs, what they're really saying is, "in coming to a different conclusion than me, you've effectively said that one of us is less enlightened than the other in making an assessment of these films. I assert that it is you." This is not a surprising reaction.
I expect Gravity to clean up most of the technical awards, Gatsby to rock the design awards, 12 Years and Dallas to rock the big dramatic awards, and I'm really hoping Her picks up what it can (Spike Jonze should be a lock for writing).
Oh, and it should be hilarious watching Jackass win an Oscar. Yikes.
Wow, you pretty much nailed it.

"I've been witness to every motion picture since the dawn of cinema, and I'm not impressed!" he exclaimed. "'Her'? Guess who was bored by this movie -- him!" he said as he pointed to himself. "Even the main character spent the whole movie texting."
"Don't get me started on 'Gravity,'" he said. "If I wanted to watch a depressed middle-aged woman float around for 90 minutes, I'd go to the YMCA pool."
He also went after some older Oscar winners. "'Annie Hall'? I'd rather let Woody Allen watch my kids than watch this movie again," he said to some audience groans.
Acknowledging the current controversy surrounding Allen's past, Atkinson retorted to the crowd, "So let me get this straight, you trust him?!"
Kim Novak was disturbing. 83 years old and still trying to look like a bombshell. It was depressing and I thought McConaughey did a brilliant job of handling her when it became clear she couldn't handle herself.
....and, would it be too much to ask to allow a guy like Sidney Poitier to forego the teleprompter? The man is 87 years old and one of the most eloquent celebrities in the wold and you have to make him struggle to read a teleprompter? That was disappointing.

what a load of bull, some people just don't like the same things as you, get over yourself. I don't like Apple because I don't enjoy using it... I guess that's irrational some how
Kim Novak is for the older crowd. I was watching it with my dad, and he couldn't get over how good she looked for 83 years old. He had to have known it was all plastic surgery, but still he loved her appearance. The only parts he liked more were The Wizard of Oz tribute and Bette Middler signing The Wind Beneath My Wings, in which he cried during both performances. So stuff like that isn't really for the young crowd, but for the people who remember all the performers from 50+ years ago. She was great in Vertigo btw, better than any performances you saw this year.
I still think there are way too many montages though. It's fine and dandy that they want to keep the short films and technical awards, but do they really need so many montages? You could tell even the people there were getting bored after 3+ hours and just wanted to get out of there. Small nitpick as well, but it was great how they showed clips from Jaden Smith's crappy Karate Kid remake, and nothing from the infinity superior Ralph Macchio version. Good taste Hollywood.... good taste.
