^ Well having never tried to remove spray chalk myself, I'll have to take your word for it. It still seems like a good soaking on Sunday would help, but it would probably have to be brushed as well.

What happened when Nenshi did this last time around? Were the volunteers just better/quicker, did the media have better things to worry about, or was there a little controversy too? I honestly can't remember the fallout, but I do remember that is was part of his election morning strategy.

it may not be a big deal for some of you cause you're thinking "it's just chalk", but you see this crap sprayed on all 4 corners of each block in the beltline and downtown and have to wonder how much of the city's resources are put towards cleaning it up

I guess we can just... chalk it up... to a rookie mistake by a rookie councillor. (groan)

Interesting strategy, but obviously something to be learned. I wonder if the city will start include that in the "campaign signs" rules, if such a specific document exists. But I'd imagine that it is already covered by existing bylaws as the article suggests.

According to the internet, most people use a power washer to remove spray chalk, which seems kind of dumb since even a low PSI (<2000) sprayer will remove paint anyway. It seems it's basically slightly less permanent than regular ol paint.

They really should just implement a complete ban on signs on public property. Sure, people can (and will) buy bold signs, but for everything else, problem solved. No one seems to follow the rules anyway.

Pretty much.

The guys at Enmax get pretty tired of having to do Phase II line repairs on streetlight cables when some putz hammers in a metal wire sign.

But who would we know how to vote for? The guy with the most signs is the best candidate, right?

Schuett said he doesn’t see what all the fuss is about.

“It’s sidewalk chalk,” he said. “I don’t know many children playing in the suburbs that call bylaw before they play write and play hop-scotch on the street.”
Here's his problem. The Latte sippers don't like his Yop Gobbling logic.

Interesting. Druh's win can be traced back to two polling stations - West Hillhurst (0708) & Sunnyside/Hillhurst (0709). (with Parkdale/Crescents Heights next). Vote was relatively close in most other stations, but the margin of victory in these densely populated areas was what won the day. (Taylor garnered only 19% in 0708) Fortress Latte Sipper held the line for Druh.

While that's not a surprise, it does show how difficult it'll be to win this ward without these specific polling stations. Clearly these densely populated left leaning areas are a formidable challenge to anyone trying to bust in with a conservative agenda.

More surprising is how bad Brent Alexander did in the 0708 poll, which should have been been where he made hay - I believe that's where he lives. Druh eventually came out against a hugely detested cell tower in the West Hillhurst area which was probably wise...it's what swung my vote.

Rookie city councillor Sean Chu thinks he’s found strong arguments against climate change: it’s cold in Calgary, and icy in the Antarctic.

Chu, who is skeptical that man-made climate change is a real phenomenon, has been widely chided — by Mayor Naheed Nenshi, among others — for publicly questioning climate change this weekend, based on recent weather.

You'd see a firestorm of opposition from the chamber and the business community. It's be nasty.

That comments section makes my head explode. There was everything in there from bashing the "Loony Left" to "Don't by from China" and "Praise Allah the Merciful". I thought I was reading a Rick Bell rant with his Yes Men swallowing it all in one shot.

Ya, I know the sign shops in particular would hate it. I just figure that no one follows the rules anyway, and realistically its a pure eyesore. Its really adding nothing to the debate or helping anyone make decisions as to who is the best candidate.

In the last election the signs made me vote. To vote for Hard Poo Man because of the lies Connelly had on his signs.

Right, but those were bold-signs and I'm fine with those. Its the "Elect Slava, he's the greatest" on every corner we can do without.
