so we should trade all potential prospects and young players for guys that have proven to play in the NHL...why even show up at the draft, just keep trading draft picks. Rebuilds require patience, you don't have any if its already time to move on from Sven
Since when does trading for a 23 year old player mean that we now have to trade all potential prospects.
Going from Sven to Kadri likely does little to nothing in terms of the time frame of the rebuild and certainly doesn't mean the team has little patience.
Its not time to move on from Sven it would be using Sven to get an asset you think improves your team.
sven is 2-3 years away from hitting his prime (and we don't even know what that is yet he could very well just be yet another kid who tore up jr and never made it) and russel is a UFA who could have been had for next to nothing less than a year ago.
In other words two question marks for a 23 year old top two C who is just entering his prime isn't going to cut it. Nonis should be fired for making that deal and Burke should be GM of the year.
Given what the Leafs need, I wouldn't even do Sven and Brodie for Kadri.
Neither would the Flames
Not super interested in Kadri, personally, but proposals are always fun. How about something like:
Cammalleri, Backlund, Russell (or a 2nd) for Kadri and Gardiner

It would be interesting if some sort of a deal could be centred around Cammy. Sign him for something like 4 years @ 6M and then package him at half salary with another player for Kadri. Depending on what player is added that could be a good deal for us. Leafs get Cammy, <insert player> and about 12M in cap relief (also gets us 3M closer to the floor for 4 years). The quality of player added could also drop if we were willing to take a cap dump back like Liles. By the time we are looking to contend all the dead money would be off our books and Kadri would still be in his prime.
Whether or not we can afford Kadri is not a question even worth asking. If there is a will, there is a way. Trades happen all the time that are often incredibly lopsided, and Nonis isn't exactly a master of the craft. People stating we couldn't possibly afford it are wrong, simply because you don't know how certain teams value certain players.
For me, personally, if a trade can be worked out that doesn't cost us as much as a 1st and one of our top prospects, you do it. If you look at the supposed "depth" the Flames have at center, it's a whole lot of bottom 6 guys, anyone playing above the 3rd line would be great, but a bit of a long shot.
Kadri is a bonafide top 6 guy that is only 23, and would absolutely give the rebuild a push forward.
The only guy I wouldnt trade straight up for Kadri is Monahan. Everyone else is fair game.

I think the Flames should sign Russel and move Brodie. To my eye (and statistically), he has out performed Brodie this year.
that said, I would make that trade. The flames would be wise to sign Cammalleri to an extension then make the deal and take a 1st or former first from the Leafs as well. Certainly Burke knows who is in their system and has his favorites.

The bolded part is the reason why the flames will not be able to get him without a 1st or top prospect being involved. I agree with the poster that said Backlund + Sven would probably be close. We have seen what top 6 centers get in trade, and its not cheap. Even if you don't like Kadri's attitude, he will not get any less.

Yes, he has. However one player is a 5'10" 27yr old UFA, the other is a home-grown 6' 23 yr old. I like Russell, but if I had to choose between him and Brodie it would be a no-brainer.

With Monahan. Colborne, Backlund on the roster and Knight and potentially Granlund ont he farm hard to see a spot that Kadri would fit for the price that they are likely going to be asking.
I imagine they would want a defenseman of similar age/ability back and outside of Brodie who should go nowhere we don't have that available.
Boston has a line with three centre. So what?
If you can play centre you can easily adapt to rw and lw.

true. age should be considered.
Brodie's upside is still unknown. By 27 he could be better than Russel ever was.....
Flames best bet would be to move the UFAs for assets then make a deal, more like a 3 team deal.
Something like Cammy to Vancouver for Tanev.
Then Tanev + Backlund + ? to Toronto for Kadri.
That type of deal would be the Flames best bet as Toronto likely looks for a similar age stay at home d-man and a downgrade at center in return for Kadri.
The value likely isn't there in the deal above but it is something like that the Leafs will be looking for IMO. Think about what Seguin got but less then that.

Eh, he still might be had for less, you never really know. He's not at Seguin's level (of talent or potential) so look at what he got and subtract.
(less than a 1st and a top prospect, Backlund + Bart is probably ballpark, but you could also go with Cammy and Sieloff, or something like that).
