Guys like John Scott are an embarrassment to the league. I like seeing fights, but when a guy is not capable of playing hockey at the NHL level, he shouldn't be wearing the uniform.

True, I guess it's just the tone of the argument being had. Jackman, IMO, really isn't much of a hockey player, I don't know why he's here. Same with Scott. But at the same time, when you have two incredibly similar players, and one gets "he has no place in hockey" and the other gets "maybe we should trade him, or send him to the AHL, so ____ can play" it's kind of like using kid gloves.
But you're right, the distaste for Jackman is obvious, I suppose I feel people are just being hyperbolic about Scott without REALLY being all that fair to the situation or the actual player.

no, we don't, because Tim Jackman and Brian McGrattan can actually play hockey and play a meaningful shift in the NHL. Jackman even had a 10 goal and 23 points season for the Flames once and McGrattan hasn't even fought this season, but has logged some hard-nosed, gritty shifts. Scott, on the other hand, is simply not very good at the game of hockey. He's only out there for 3-4 minutes per game because he's big and knows how to fight. John Scott is exactly the type of player that the NHL needs to get out of the game.

No you're right, there's definitely zero difference between loving a player and thinking that he didn't deserve multiple slashes from another player after having done nothing, just because he's an enforcer. Totally the same thing.
Kessel is still a cheap player, and a whiner, and he isn't elite, and Lupul is average, Bernier is a bottom 10 starter, Phaneuf is going to take a paycut because he's just above average, your team is going to flounder in the second half, Kadri is a second line center at best, Bozak is half the reason Kessel puts up points, and uhhh, yeah that should about cover the Leafs chat for today, feel free to just read one of those talking points if you feel the continued need to bring up the Leafs on the Flames board every chance you get.

John Scott ATOI: 4:57
Brian McGrattan ATOI: 4:36
Tim Jackman ATOI: 3:43 (the major and lack of games impacts this, obviously)
We view McGrattan with rose coloured glasses because he's our guy, but the truth is, getting rid of the John Scotts also means getting rid of the McGrattans and Jackmans.

We sure do.
As Resolute pointed out, Scott plays more than either of those guys, and Jackman had more fights last year. Scott plays gritty and hard-nosed, just like Grats, and has only had 1 fight this season.
I'm just not seeing the major difference that you're seeing. These guys are all essentially the same player.
I love Grats too, but let's have a little dose of reality.

Right now if we could find a way to get those guys out of the league, it would be a better place, and the Flames would be a better team!

Maybe. You could always end up with two more Butler-types.
Actually, I think McGrattan could play more ice time... if he had a couple decent energy linemates.

Bouma does the same thing McGrattan does and is better at it anyways.
No problem with letting McGrattan go. He is a stand up guy too, not a loser like Scott.

Don't kid yourself, I like McGrattan. I think we need him because of guys like Scott but he isn't the most tallented hockey player, if the game changes then I think he's gone. I think the Flames could actually go with 4 decent lines if need be.
Jackman needs to be off the team.

I don't think only TOI is enough to make an argument about those players, but sure, I might be biased ... good chance I am. But I have watched a lot of Sabres games over the last few years because of Vanek, and I have to tell you that in all the years I have followed the NHL, I have a hard time remembering a more useless player than John Scott. I haven't always got the same vibe with Jackman and McGrattan ... and that's coming from a guy who desperately wants the Flames to waive Jackman

Yes, not only can you but you should. This isn't a court of law, it's a business and no one goes to the games to see John Scott but they do go for Eriksson.

I hate it when coaches use a player like Scott or the late Derek Boogaard to play the head hunting role.
Watching either of them play live (not on TV), you would constantly see them starting to take a run at a player from well away from the play taking place-in fact they were usually so far out that they would not be visible on a TV screen. Luckily for the players on opposite teams, they rarely connected on any of these runs that they would take.
The guy is more of a goon than a fighter in my eyes, players that play the role that Scott plays do not make the NHL a better game. You can talk about ridding the game of fighting but that still doesn't stop this type of role player. Certain teams will keep a player like this around long after fighting has been banned from the game.
