Backlund displayed obvious skill but never put up any eye popping numbers anywhere, even in his draft year.

Yes, it does take a couple seasons at least for players to figure out how to excel offensively at the top level. But Monahan has a level of maturity that is unlike most his age, which is why I think he can get a head start in the league without much issue.

Meh. Potential low risk high reward, but I'm not holding my breath. I've seen him play a bit over the years and he's been underwhelming, hopefully this will give him a kick in the butt and we see more of his potential.

Small price to pay, though. Not a bad trade.

Gaining 15-20 pounds in a couple months would leave me skeptical normally but watching him in person, I can believe it.

And (not directed at RichKlit) the people bitching about people bitching about this trade seem to be far worse...

And maybe a lot of us might find that comment offensive. Doesn't take a genius to know that that getting something for a potential nothing in the future makes sense.

In tonight's win over the Red Wings, Colborne had 2 assists, was a +2 and went 8-3 in the faceoff circle. Just under 15 mins of ice time.

The thing that shocks me the most about this trade is that sureloss didn't break it.

My world is shattered... I don't know what's right anymore.

I'm glad he did well, but look at Detroit's roster............that may be the worst lineup they could ice right now.

I hope he keeps it up against better competition.

  • Galiardi was an RFA and not a fit in San Jose. He really wanted to play in Calgary. We got him for a little less than he is worth.
Honestly you need to look pretty hard not to like any of these deals. All of them added good young depth to the Flames for a bare minimum of cost. All of them were good deals value wise. All of them fill roles that need filling.

When you get a player like Colborne for almost nothing and you have the C depth in Calgary like we do than you are happy about the move. People need to stop trying so hard to hate everything.
Don't forget about Russell for a 5th too

Kadri was also underwhelming for a few years. Same system. Toronto fans had him in every trade to get rid of him- Kadri broke out and now they wouldn't think of it. From what I understand, it's a good system there on the Marlie's and they had a great coach in Eakins.

I think Russell has been awesome so far- another great pick up for next to nothing.

I'd guess this trade has Burke's hands all over it. Nice to see we're getting bigger and younger. My only worry is the reports that he isn't very aggressive.

Here's a little background on Colborne.

Quote:
excelled with 10 goals in his first 12 games. He displayed a passion for driving the net, forcing his way through defenders and abandoning a give-and-go game to incorporate more individuality. When Mikhail Grabovski got hurt, the Leafs decided to go with their hot hand from the AHL. Colborne rewarded them by scoring a goal and four points in five games before he fizzled out and was reassigned to the Marlies. The 6-foot-5 centre only found the back of the net six more times in the AHL regular season and spent the better part of the second half battling through a nagging wrist injury that kept him out of the AHL All-Star game. Wrist issues complicated accepting passes and his willingness to push towards the net dissipated as he faded into the perimeter.
He had wrist surgery this summer so should be good to go.

A 4th rounder and Colborne are both potential somethings and nothings. I like the trade, or at least don't have a huge issue with it, but others wont. That's pretty much a point of the discussion board here, telling people to "quit bitching" because they don't agree with you degrades the discussion, or at least potentially could.

Don't have a problem with the trade, but I have hard time seeing Colborne having enough offensive upside to be a top 6 player.

Colborne is an upgrade on Horak imo so this could bump him to the AHL. I'm hoping Stajan is traded so we can get a better feel on how some of these youngsters can do.

What part of that trade didn't you like?

Neither of those two were worth much or in the long term plans.

When Colborne was scoring, he was fearless, individualistic driving into scoring areas and relied less on the give and go plays and teammates. As a bonus, he had a red hot Joey Crabb flanking him before the latter was called up to the Leafs.

While he has a wide range of stickhandling ability, I’m not convinced he has a blistering shot, or a sniper’s ability. To have success, he needs to get to those dirty areas, and often. It’s more about positioning and net presence. When he didn’t have the puck he would go to the net.

When he reverted to the perimeter game, he would stand just off to the side, or maintain some distance off the boards, relying on playmaking skills.
The article is worth a read if you are curious about Colborne. It sounds like that wrist injury really affected his game. Hopefully he can put the tentative stuff behind him and become a force out there going to the net.
