I doubt he would be the top center or guy relied upon for offense but looking at how young and inexperienced the roster is I see no reason he can't make it as the 2nd line center or a guy that is the shutdown guy and gets a ton of minutes playing against the top players on other teams and PK.
Not sure how many other centers would be better options playing in key situations than him, especially with about 0 chance that MacKinnon is on the team.

The top 3 centres should be McDavid, Monahan, and Horvat. Gauthier is better than none of these players.

I highly doubt (and don't think he should) that McDavid gets a regular shift and certainly don't want him out there is a 1 goal lead for Canada. I think he is much better suited for the 13th forward playing on the PP and in more sheltered minutes. I am not sure that at this tournament that Horvat is a better player or that he can't be more useful on the wing.
Gauthier fits the role of defensive/FO guy that winning teams need and the type of guy you want on the ice in a tie or 1 goal (lead) game.
I have Monahan, Laughton, Gauthier and Petan as centers right now with McDavid as extra forward. I moved Horvat to the wing because Gauthier is a better F/O (by reports) and defensively.

McDavid's age and his defense are his biggest handicaps. He needs to prove he can play that much better in all three zones than the guys he is fighting for ice time with. Frederik Gauthier has 6 inches and 45 lbs on him. He uses his size well and is excellent in the defensive zone.
Keep in mind this is normally a tournament for 19 year olds. To make it as a 16 year old is incredible. To make it as 16 year old and play top line minutes? Not even Crosby did that.

Great article about Connor McDavid and his performance in yesterday's win over Sweden.

You are correct. That said it is tough not to route for the kid. Personally I hope he earns a shift.

Poirier's speed on that shorthanded breakaway is generating some buzz over on hfboards.

To be fair I thought he was just being politically correct. He was just drafted by Vancouver (arguably Calgary's #1 rival) and was on national television with his new GM and a tonne of Canuck fans watching.
And he certainly did NOT say "I don't want to play in Calgary" haha
I'm sure he would have been ecstatic to be drafted by his home town team! But they passed him by.

Any chance Gaunce makes it as 4C? He has had 4 points in the last 2 games, is a big body who is used to playing on international-sized ice in Bellveville and had a great playoffs last season (8g 14a in 17gms).

On national TV? No, but the kid hated the Flames and wanted nothing to do with this franchise.

I don't understand the issue with "skating weird".
It's like yeah, he's fast, has a good shot, incredible vision, etc.... but he skates funny. Who cares? It's like meeting the girl of your dreams, beautiful, funny, intelligent, incredible body... but that outfit she's wearing is horrible.

Can you provide a quote please? Honestly I'd like to see it as I have never heard Shinkaruk say he hated the Flames.

HFBoards is packed with juvenile mouthbreathers, so generating buzz there may not bode too well for his career.

This is just a summer evaluation camp. There won't be any decisions made now. The real selection camp will go in early December.
There will likely be some players who were at this camp who don't get invited to the main camp, and some players not invited to this camp who get invited to the main camp.

I bet klimchuk get a winter invite. and Hopefully Janko gets to go back to usb for a spot too. Unless Monahan stays with the big club this year I can see him being a lock for the squad. By the sounds of it he's had a great camp.

taylor hall is a terrible skater, he drags his feet and is too bent over, also, he is a very fast skater. once poirier proves himself at the NHL level, nobody will care how funny he skates.

They may change it up a little.

Among the ideas Hockey Canada is mulling over is making cuts for the final roster for the 2014 world junior championship in Europe once exhibition games are done, rather than finalizing the roster in North America prior to pre-tournament games.
