Gillies continues to age like a fine wine in Hockey East.

Defense:
Giordano, Wideman, Brodie remain in the top 3 rotation.
Cundari and Breen make the squad as rookies.
Babchuck walks, Carson does too.
Sarich, Butler and Smith fill out the backend roster.
Wotherspoon pulls a Brodie and plays 4 games to start the season before being send down to Abbotsford.

to come (maybe...)

Ramo is high on Feaster's plans and will definately be over next year as Ramo has also expressed his desire to come over to us. Ramo has been a premiere goalie in the KHL with phenominal stats playing with talented professionals in the KHL. He might even be penciled in as the starter already with Joey Mac as the back-up.
Brossoit will be with Abby I believe with either Berra or Ortio- whomever impresses the most, and the loser goes back to Europe. Unless the Flames feel Brossoit needs one more year with his JR club, then Berra and Ortio will be in Abby. Only problem is, I believe they signed Taylor for another year so I'm not sure how this will factor in- sooner or later, one of these goalies have to be shopped because there just isn't any room for all of them.
Personally, I hope Butler is gone by next season and Breen makes the team. I'm not sure I am a fan of Tangs and his attitude anymore so I hope we can fetch something at the draft for him. I am still not a fan of Stajan- face-offs or not and hope we get something for him as well. I hope we let Jackman walk- he doesn't hardly fight anymore and IMO is just taking up valuable space and hardly chips in offensively anymore. I hope we keep Cammy for his leadership and offence- the team still needs some vets sprinkled in or else we will just be another Edmonton. I hope we give Cerkenka a fair chance- if he doesn't walk.
My wishlist of players:
Douglas Murray-D
Anton Volchenkov-D
Krejci- C
O'Reilly-C (yes, still- in Feb. of course)
Chris Stewart-R
Patrik Berglund-C
Wayne Simmonds-R
Derek Stepan-C (most likely untouchable now)
Mike Smith intrigues me a lot however, I believe he will ask too much $$ and term.

- Both make close to the same $$ and have similar cap hits
- Both are heading into final year of their contracts
- Flames and Avs aren't going to be division rivals anymore
- If Stastny doesn't end up being part of the long term solution in CGY, he can still be dealt as a rental next deadline...same for Cammy in COL
2. Something based around Tanguay for Wisniewski
- Different GM signed Wisniewski, new one might not be that attached to him
- When they signed Wisniewski, Nikitin hadn't established himself as a top 4 D-man yet
- They also hadn't yet acquired Johnson, Erixon or Murray either
- In other words, they are deep on D and could use a setup man for Gaborik
- We have an abundance of smaller, skilled wingers, and could use a top 4 Dman
- Tanguay is a similar player to Prospal (who is UFA), but 5 years younger
3. Attempt to cheaply acquire Joel Ward from Washington
- They have 4 big bodied RWers with Ovy, Brouwer, Fehr and Ward all signed for next year at a combined $17,705,129 cap hit
- Brouwer and Fehr just signed extensions, and Ovy isn't going anywhere...Ward could be the odd man out and might be cheaply acquired
- They are tight to the cap next year, and Ward carries a $3 million cap hit
- We need some big bodied, physical, tenacious right wingers and have plenty of cap space
- Ward, at 32, isn't "pre-apex" but he definitely brings an element that the Flames sorely lack
|
I think Ward is over-paid and only got his contract because of his flash in the pan playoff performance a couple of years ago. Not a fan of obtaining him at his price tag at all. Just because we have cap space, I think we should spend it wisely, and not on other GM's overpaid mistakes.

Here is a nice read on Raymond.
Quote:
When you include the context of the type of minutes Raymond has played, it becomes even more of a worry. Raymond has started the vast majority of his shifts in the offensive zone and is fifth on the team in Offensive Zone Start Percentage, behind only the Sedins, Burrows, and Schroeder at 59.6%. In addition, Raymond has faced some of the weakest quality of competition among Canucks forwards: he is 9th on the team in Corsi Quality of Competition.
Essentially, Raymond has been given sheltered minutes, which makes sense since he played much of the season alongside a rookie centre, Schroeder. With those minutes, you would expect an offensively gifted player like Raymond to excel, but his puck possession statistics tell a different story.
At even-strength, this has actually been one of the worst seasons of his career.
If we account for ice time, this becomes clear. His even-strength points per 60 minutes are the third lowest of his career, ahead of only last season, when he was struggling to fully recover from his broken back, and his sophomore season. His even-strength goals per 60 minutes is the second lowest of his career, below even last season and ahead of just his sophomore season.

Not a 20 goal scorer in the bottom 6, barely one in the top 6.
Does not have the grit, or puck pressure, to be a bottom 6 forward.
Yes, he is OK on the PK.
Good character.

For a big guy he is very soft. The flames do not need to add another soft top 9 player. As of now there really are not a lot of spots open, so i would pass. I'm not convinced Feaster is going to be able to move any of our players under contract this summer. Might as well wait until the deadline to get rid of Cammi, Stempniak and Stajan when their value is at it's highest. No point on getting rid of them now at a less price to bring in Raymond.

I posted somewhere a few days ago I was starting to waiver on my desire for the Flames to sign Raymond. Something about keeping the Stink of the Canucks away from the Flames.
If they sign him I won't complain, if he doesn't sign in CGY I won't complain either. Kind of like Cervenka, would like to see him back but won't be upset if he goes.

The Flames are small and soft.
Adding Raymond would be like a flat ginger chick adding more freckles

Raymond has "Jay Feaster special" written all over him. A soft, moderately skilled winger on the wrong side of his career. If he played center in junior he'd be the complete package.
Might as well slap a Flames jersey and a $3 million price tag on him right now.

If Feaster could somehow pull that off, I don't want him fired anymore. Then again, I don't think there's any chance in hell anyone could pull that off much less this guy.
