What was suspendable? Bourque and Prust maybe, but it would be a reach given the way things have been handled.
But see this brings back my main point with the massive inconsistencies of shannahan's discipline. Ference gets one game for a blatant headshot. Abdelcader of Detroit got two games for "charging" when his hit looked ten times worse than Gryba's. Gryba gets two games because shanny said in his rambling explanation that it was two games because the head (in his eyes) was the principle point of contact.
When you watch the Borque gif is that not a blatant headshot? Should that not be equal to Gryba's apparent headshot?
I swear shanny sits in his office and throws darts at a board to determine any suspensions

The Gryba decision is inexplicable, but that doesn't elevate Bourque's elbow to suspendable. There was nowhere near as much force in that as their was with Ference or Abdelkadar. It was a cheap shot, but it's not suspendable.
If there aren't at LEAST 2 suspensions from that game, Shannahan should be replaced. It's stuff like that, not like the Gryba hit, that we need out of the game.

Blatant headshot with an elbow by someone with a history do suspensions, during that type of game? Yeah I think that's suspendable. Just because Conacher wasn't injured doesn't mean it wasn't vicious, and over the line.
If that was Chris Neil doing the same thing he would have got a game. But, MacLean and the Sens aren't classless whiners like the Habs. They didn't overreact like Montreal did, which was the reason Gryba was given two games for a clean hit.
Gotta love Boruque taking a cheapshot at a 5"8 rookie as well. Hopefully he tries that on someone bigger like Chris Neil next game.

I think it's naive to think that Shannahan calls all the shots here. There's way too many other factors that are at play...public perception, advertising perception, direction of where leadership wants the game to go into....to think that only 1 guy is involved in this decision making.

Actually, he called it to give his team instructions to back off in case the Canadiens decided to try for a few more cheap shots with 16 seconds left in the game.
If the same thing happens tomorrow though, I hope he calls a time out just as late in the game, simply so he can pull out a mirror and adjust his moustache.
Sad behaviour by Montreal last night. Sad enough to make me want to see a Bryan Murray team win.
No suspensions because there was no injury while Gryba gets suspended just because Eller gets hurt. Bush. League.
Whether or not we agree with it, the one thing that the league has been fairly consistent about with regards to supplemental discipline is that the injury or lack thereof is a huge factor. I don't necessarily think that's the way it should be, but that is how it works in the real world too, with, for example, prison terms for murder being much longer than for attempted murder. Either way, I have less of a problem with that than I do with the appearance that certain teams and star players are treated very differently than others.

Players should be suspended regardless of injury because the fact that they're running around throwing elbows and slew footing other players demonstrates their lack of respect for their peers.

I think Shanahan had no choice but to suspend Gryba after that tasteless headline on the Ottawa Sun. Last thing the NHL needs is American media blowing it out of proportion again on why the NHL is so dangerous, and that players can get away with injuring players like that. Fair? Probably not, but like Table 5 said, there are a lot of other factors that Shanahan has to weigh in when dishing out punishment.
