So with the Leafs likely to make the playoffs, I believe the Oilers takeover as champions of the missing-the-playoffs cup.

The Islanders may also get in, and the Wild (and the BJs have an outside shot). So my question is:

Does this mean the Edmonton and Calgary are now 1-2 for missing the playoffs streaks?

Watching Schultz closely tonight, his production mostly happened in the first half of the season.

He's just brutally bad in his own end, he's not overly physical, he gives the puck away like a night cook at a turnover factory and when he gets the puck in his own end he handles it like a grenade.

He would have been better off playing in the AHL this year. Right now Brodie is progressing a lot faster then Schultz is.

The Oilers are in a pinch, he either has to have a really good camp next year or you farm him out.

But he's just not good.

Assuming Winnipeg, Dallas and Columbus don't make the playoffs, going back to the Thrashers years Winnipeg hasn't made the playoffs since 2007, Dallas would also have a longer streak than Calgary as they haven't made it since 2008 and Columbus and Carolina would be tied with Calgary as they made it last in 2009.

This was a perfect scenario for them and they crapped the bed. Their first line and top defenseman had a head start on most of the league playing in the AHL, first time in years they were amongst the least injured teams in the league, their goaltender has a career season, they play respectable defensively and they still end up behind a Flames team that has it's worst season since the Young Guns era. Honestly I just don't know what it's going to take for that team to take the next step as they are burning through ELC's without making progress.

It's already happening, though in a far more subdued fashion. The Hockey News has simply, and quietly, stopped covering the Oilers entirely. There used to be about three cover stories and two "have patience Oilers fans" stories a year. However, since their silly "the AHL might as well just cancel the season and hand Oklahoma City the title" cover/lead story at the outset of the lockout, nothing but flies.

Sportsnet is going to ride that pony forever, especially since they own the rights to Oilers games. TSN doesn't acknowledge mistakes, so I'm betting their response will mostly be to say nothing about it.

Moving in the right direction? Why because they were in 8th for a whole day this year? Or because they will be a top 5 draft this year?

This team made some noise for exactly 2 weeks, and whimpered out when the going got tough. It's loser attitude has been exposed, and I can't see it changing even with another elite player on the team.

I don't think the Oilers rebuild is working in the way they would like at all, and maybe its because of the shortened season, but it does feel to me like they did take a small step forward this year.

The Flames may very well finish above the Oil this year in the standings, but that doesn't really matter IMO. What matters is how deep into the season were you playing meaningful games for, and the botto line is the Oilers were playing them longer than we were, and probably longer than they have in the past. Nice that we've gone on a run when the games don't matter, but I remember a young Oilers squad that did that a few years back as well, and I didn't think that amounted to much.

Oilers have a long way to go, and need to start making some smarter moves, but it did seem like they took a small step forward this year IMO. Heck, we even split the series with them versus owning them.
