In a 4-2 win, the Oil Kings have swept the Tigers and will likely face the Hitmen.
Brossoit made 32 out of 34 possible saves.

Some high praise from Peter Loubardias on Wotherspoon tonight. Called him the most underrated player in the WHL. Says he will be an NHL player.
He's really still a Flames fan, and it upsets me that he's not part of our broadcast crew.

Loubardias always was and always will be a hockey fan first and foremost. He gets excited for players and plays on every team because he just loves the game.
I also agree that its a shame he is no longer part of our broadcasts.

Has anyone else been strongly following the Hitmen/Rebels series so far? And if so, can you possibly confirm what I have been seeing from the Red Deer side of things...
That being that Turner Elson is the best player on the ice on any given night. I started watching the series excited to see Cody Sylvester show some skill and see how Matt Dumba stacked up in such a big tournament, only for both of these players to be VASTLY overplayed by Elson.
The stats can say what they do, but I would take Elson 10/10 times over Sylvester based on the games I have seen of them. I think this guy could sneak up on us as a good 3rd line winger in the future. Not bad for an undrafted free agent

Elwson was also an overager, that needs to be considered. I was talking to a Rebels fan about his tonight and he said he thinks Elson will be lucky to have a long minor league career and thinks he will be a bottom 6 player in the AHL at best.
Keep in mind this is just a client I work with, so I can't say much about his knowledge of the game.

I do realise that he is an overager and took that into account, I think more of what seemed to impress me about him was with all the talk of Viktor Rask and Cody Sylvester going into this series vs the heralded Matt Dumba; that Elson was never mentioned all the while surpassing any other skater during the two games played in Red Deer.
He may be a longshot to make any NHL team, or even an AHL team for that matter, I really couldnt tell you. What I do know is:
I think Elson could be a much more common name around these parts in the next few yeats if he keeps playing the way he does.
And, I would be worried as a Hurricanes fan if they were counting on Rask turning into anything at the NHL level. I have this guy pegged for heading back to Europe.
Ps. Barring some sort of developmental miracle, I really don't think we will see Matt Dumba being an impact NHL player. A poor mans Dion Phaneuf..... so Babchuk

Gillies was also named a second-team All-American: http://www.friars.com/sports/m-hocke...041213aad.html
The last rookie to be named an All-American was Stars' goalie, Richard Bachman in 2008.
Quite an impressive list of honours...

I was sure that he wouldn't be in the Flames' plans, but I'm surprised how quickly this is happening: Nick Larson signed an ATO with the Peoria Rivermen and has already played a game for them.

I don't know how this would change things in terms of signing a guy this early but I am pretty sure Larson is in same boat as Schultz was and therefore can use the loophole to sign prior to the August deadline.

it's an amateur tryout. he signed with Peoria not St. Louis. It's no different than signing to play in Russia or Sweden

It's pretty doubtful Nick Larson is in the plans.

So out of all the guys who got ELC's this year, how many can you prospect pros see coming over to Canada, playing with Abbotsford and having legit shots with the big club at training camp?
Granlund and Ramage particularly interest me right now.

I can't see anyone having a legit shot at the Flames without an outstanding training camp. That obviously could change with moves over the summer, but with the overabundance of top 6 guys already and guys like Sven, Horak, Reinhart, Byron, Jones and Street already pushing for spots I can't see any of the forwards starting season in NHL. I think Hanowski likely goes to AHL and Granlund spends another year in Finland.
Defense I would say Cundari (did he just sign?) has a shot at NHL, Ramage likely is in AHL all year long and Wotherspoon spends year in AHL or back to WHL.

Of all the recent signings I think they all start in the AHL.
Reto Berra - I think will see some NHL time and could potentially start in Calgary but it will depend on others as to whether it actually happens or not. Kiprusoff will need to retire and Ramo will have to decline to sign for Berra to get a spot to open the year.
John Ramage - He is probably the most NHL ready of all the position players just signed. He may see a few games as an injury recall if the logjam on the blueline clears up a bit as I have Cundari & Breen ahead of him.
Tyler Wotherspoon - Will need at least 1 year in the AHL in my opinion.
Laurent Brossoit - I see his NHL debut you a coupe years away at least.
Marcus Granlund - Far from NHL ready.

I'd say none of the ELC players have much a chance but Hanowski, Ramage and Witherspoon in that order have an outside chance. Hanowski as we could find a spot for a big RW if he can improve his skating. Ramage and Witherspoon will be in tough with Breen and Cundari at the top of the list for defencemen knocking on the door.
