I actually see lots of good reasons for keeping him for next year.

I like Stempniak myself but given his statement of open for business I assumed that there was going to be some house cleaning which may have involved any veteran players that had value to teams. Even Stajan has somewhat proven his worth so I have no problems with him returning as well.

They are a stupid organization that has consistently over rated what they had team wise. Has led to a point where they move the assets far too late or are unable to move them. Nothing classy about it or better than nothing about it either. They have bumbled and stumbled their way for years and this is the result.

Jeff @Txtbridges 3m Wow traded Comeau. I guess they really are going to rebuild after all.
Is this guy kidding?
Yeah, trading comeau, first step to making this team competitive. Definitely.

But on the bright side, at least we moved assets out this year. It should be interesting to see how much wheeling Feaster does at the draft. I just hope it doesn't include trading our own pick down in the 1st round.
|
bingo on the second point...
as for the bodies that remain, i'm pretty sure they all have one more year (at least) left on their contracts so still might be able to move them in the summer months as teams reshuffle the decks.
either way, i am fine with the deals we've made or not made...i am the rose coloured glasses fan who believes this can be a very quick turnaround.

They failed to trade Babchuk and Jackman, which to me is bad asset management. Babchuk wasnt given the chance to play, which he should have been IMO since Iginla was asked to waive his NMC and they had given up on the season.

That's the key - did they have value, or enough value. I think a lot of the guys probably didn't based on contract reasons. And a guy like Stempniak wouldn't fetch enough to warrant trading him when you can keep him and maybe get more next deadline.

Iginla trade: Got vastly less than any NHL commentator thought he would, bad PR during the trade, extenuating circumstances limiting the value, blah blah blah. The Bottom Line is that he absolutely did not, in any way, win this trade. There are only explanations/excuses why he lost it.
Bouwmeester trade: Modest return included a 1st rounder, and may have reflected a soft market. Probably a fair trade, given Bouwmeester's contract next year. One has to wonder why the Flames didnt elect to eat some of that salary to sweeten the return.
Comeau trade: Congratulations. Feaster's best trade of the season netted a 5th rounder.
Babchuk Trade: Didn't happen.
Stempniak trade: Didnt happen.
Tanguay Trade: Didnt happen.
Trade to acquire an actual NHL calibre goalie to replace Kipper: Didnt happen.
Trade to turn late-1st round pick(s) into a top prospect or early 1st: Didnt happen.
If he had done, and either won or at least not lost the majority of those deals, I would have given him an A+. Standing pat, buying, or losing a significant number of deals would have gotten him an F.
As is, I think he deserves a C. Not terrible. But I still want him gone.
Of course he still has the chance to do some of those deals at the draft. Would be nice to see.
|
Stanley Cup: didn`t happen. Fire Feaster.
C`mon - that is simply a dumb argument....trades didn`t happen because other teams didn`t want to dance. Can`t do much about that if you cannot manage to persuade someone else to part with assets even our FANS don`t want. Sheesh....

I think the trades that happened were fine and necessary (though Comeau actually tries and could have stayed), but I was hoping we'd be able to off-load more of the random flim-flam on our roster.
However, my goal for this off-season is to see King and Feaster fired, so I remain hopeful.

I am softening a bit on what he got in return for Iginla and Bouwmeester. Not as good as what I was hoping, but the 1st round picks can be valuable. Either they bundle them to move up and get better picks, or they can package them with a veteran to get a young gun who is already proving himself in the NHL, or keep them and develop what they pick. No matter how you look at it, they are sitting in a good position to build for the future.

I think the trades and non trades sent a positive message to the league:
- Iginla was given final say in his trade. I believe the team could have asked him to give them teams he would accept a trade to and then just tell him this is where you're going.
- JBo was treated with respect as they kept his streak alive (on paper anyway). I suspect that was something important to him and the team did what they could.
- Kipper by contractual rights shouldn't have needed to be consulted but he was treated like it was his decision and he had rights. Given his rumoured family situation the team again, treated a long time player with respect.
I believe this message to players is you aren't just considered a commodity with The Flames. What is important to you is what's important to us if it helps us all reach our goals. Maybe a 19 year old fresh to the league doesn't care about this but to a guy who's been in the league for even a couple of years, I think this plays a factor. I think it's also something agents, parents, and junior coaches recognize too and they all influence younger players' decisions.
The team treated and does treat the players with the respect they deserve and have earned which should help the team in attracting talent. I'm sure they aren't the only team to treat their players with this much respect and class but I'm happy they are on that list.

they also were willing to give a kid 2.5 million bucks as a signing bonus, without even having the kid having to suit up for the flames ( i kid, i kid).

So how did our man Feaster do? Personally as much as I have been dogging him he was the only GM to get 2 first round picks and he turned a waiver pickup in Comeau for a 5th which is pretty awesome. I understand he was forced with the Iginla trade and as much as I don't like the Bouwmeester trade I'm glad for the cap relief. Hopefully we target some players in the summer now and have an awesome draft!

$14 mil in cap space
Because that has to factor in the assessment.

I`d be curious to know how you can have a goal that you can do absolutely nothing personally to accomplish.

I think the team did well given the circumstances. The first round picks should really help if Feaster has indeed "improved our scouting."

My goal for the team. I did my bit by offloading my season ticket holdings.

I remember in grade school when I had a hell of a time trying to get someone to trade me their chocolate chip cookies for my banana.
Oddly enough even children know the worth of a trade. I think you are very misguided if you think Babchuk and Jackman had tonnes of offers and Feaster just decided they were chocolate chip cookies.

Thought the team did alright on the Iginla, and Bouwmeester returns.
Then I saw what Pominville and Erat returned today. Probably still did alright on Iginla (NTC hurt) but think that had they waited with Bouw teams may have panicked a little bit. Washington and Nashville certainly did today.

I really doubt the Flames organization gets any bouquets around the league for being classy. We're no better or worse than most organizations in that respect. You know what attracts talent? Winning.
And frankly, the Flames probably wouldn't be the basement-dwelling sad sack team they are today if they had been more hard-headed about their roster. Fact is, in pro sports players are commodities. And the yardstick by which all franchises are measured is winning.
And that works both ways. People forget that Joe Sakic was prepared to cheerfully leave the Avalanche for more money.
