I know which camp the Oilers are in. The team that has been illegitimately and unrealistically spewing "next year" for a long long time.

The Oilers motto should be something along the lines of "Next Year, Every Year."

If they win Cup within the next 3/4 years they may well be saying that for a while. But according to one poster it may be done "illigitimately" so it wouldn't count I guess.

They have to make the playoffs before they can win the cup. If they make the playoffs within the next 3/4 years i'll be surprised.

The Oilers and Flames have both been bad since their respective Stanley Cup final appearances. We showed up in 2004. They did in 2006.

What does this mean?

That this thread is ridiculous.

Says more about your hatred/contempt for all things Oilers than it does about your knowledge of hockey talent moving forward. But you go with that.

Imagine.... that on a Flames board. I'm actually having trouble getting my head around it.

It isnt luck, its the farce of a 48 game season.

You do realize they are a point out of a playoff spot, right? That they're on the rise and on a 3 game winning streak, with their top line combining for 18 points in that span? If we finish ahead of them, I'll eat my shoe.

In pretty tired of this line.

The Flames won the NW division in 2006. Playfair was fired because he didnt deliver results with what was definitely one of the best teams in the NHL.

The Flames were legitimate contenders from 2004-2008. That was their window, and they went all-in duing that time, but unfortunately they didnt win a cup.

But to say that they have been a terrible team the entire team is just ignorant. This team was one of the best in the world for several years. It's kind of amazing that this whole period of time has completely evaporated right out of the memory of a lot of people who post on this site, and that suddenly there's no difference between losing in the playoffs to the president's trophy winner, versus having the most consistent stretch of failure in NHL history.

honestly this surge by Edmonton only helps the current management retain their jobs. There are a bunch of things wrong up there but if everyone wants to continue to drink the koolaid that works for me.

Really?

A team that has held home ice advantage in the playoffs for all of 1 round in over 2 decades?

Sorry man, Flames definitely went all-in, but other than 2006 and maybe 2009 they were never an elite team, just a team on the playoff side of mediocrity... 2010 to 2012 they were on the non-playoff side of mediocrity, and now they plain suck because of that failed all-in mentality.

One team is young and trending up and the other isn't. It's not about this season.

It is about how long will they be this bad. I think unless there is some sweeping changes there will more of the same from Edmonton.

The problem with the Oilers is they have to leap frog a bunch of teams and they probably don't hold a tie breaker with anyone with their wins in regulations, so I wouldn't count those chickens yet. They might not "trend" so well when their scouting group needs to fend for themselves instead of picking up the hockey news draft special and hang on the cusp of a playoff position because of the way the team is built.

Bottom line is when will they be considered a decent team? I would think that back to back playoff seasons at the minimum would be needed. What would you consider they need to accomplish to lose the loser stigma?

You mean like this?

Nuge 2 goals in 31 games
Schultz -11 and .47 points per game.
Yakupov-11 and .47 points per game.
and Eberle & Hall set to make Sedin money next year!

hahahhahaha

It's not about this season, or next season or 2 seasons or 3 seasons or 4 seasons from now. It's about when the team is relocated to Houston.
