Glencross would be valuable, if he waived, but not nearly the same return.

He's a number one D, but a 25 goal guy with grit who can play on the PP, PK and backcheck all at 2.5 a year with remaining term? That's got to be one of the best value contracts in the league.

I'd be interested. Veeeeery interested. I know Edmonton has gone on a bit of a run lately (they've won 2 games!), but that pick could still be Top 5 with a little luck. My feeling all along is that if the Flames can somehow get out of this draft with two Top-5 picks (or even Top 10), they'd be well on their way to an accelerated rebuild.
As much as we hate the greasers, Paajarvi is also not a bad young player either. I think he's starting to come into his own a bit.

Second line all around wingers, that can be secondary scorers, do not and never will trump top pairing D , regardless of salary, especially at the deadline.
Supply and demand.

the top pairing D has much more prestige, but J-Bo has significant baggage, which is why I think Glencross is more valuable.

PRO Scouts and Gms look at the skill, upside for their team and usually disregard that he has played for 2 very substandard teams.

The Oilers are loaded with guys who know what to do from the other team's blueline in. Feed them a top 2 defenceman who skates and moves the puck like Bouwmeester when you have to play them what 8 times a year and you may as well nickname our next starter Red Light Ramo.
Finding a top pairing defenceman is going to be really tough for them and cost them a boatload. Their biggest rivals handing it to them would be suicidal.

He's a first pairing guy who is putting up numbers and playing almost 30 minutes a night with another year under contract - value is huge. And Smid... why would Calgary even remotely have any interest in trading for UFAs at the deadline? Ask yourselves what a negotiating window with Smid is actually worth - a 4th or 5th rounder? He costs more than that because he has value for the remaining 15 games and the playoffs, which Calgary has absolutely no need of. Would be just mind bogglingly stupid for Calgary to pay market price for him at the deadline.

are you kidding! getting Edmonton's 1st woiuld be an absolute steal, its going to be top 10 most likely. Then add a prospect and its a "joke"

Why are so many against trading for Rattie?
I realize he's not a blue chip prospect, but he'd probably be the 3rd best prospect in our organization.
It's not about junior chemistry, it's that he's a pretty good player. Back to back 110+ point seasons in the WHL. He has a very good shot, and would be the only RW prospect this organization has.
I don't see the Blues giving up Schwartz, but Rattie likely won't get a look in the NHL for a long time with them. He is expendable. He is acquirable.
1st + Rattie isn't a terrible starting point for Bouwmeester. Plus I like the Airdrie connection.

Rattie just gives me the impression of another in a long line of CHL assassins who couldn't make the next step. I can't empirically prove why I think this, but it's just a feeling. I'd like to stay away.

I don't think any team will give up two 1sts and not draft in the first round for consecutive years but a top pairing defenceman's value is equivalent definitely. First and a good prospect is what I'd expect market to be and it should be more if it's Edmonton.
Feed Edmonton the toughest piece they need to find and that team will be better, so gambling that they'll stay in the same draft position (10th) or get worse is logically challenged. You probably end up with a mid 1st rounder and Paajarvi who is a year or two away from being a bust and couldn't even score regularly at the AHL level on a team full of NHL 1st overall picks. And the worst part is that you made your biggest rival who you need to go through to ever win anything way tougher.
Even harder to believe that some people are even saying do it for UFA Smid and a 1st. It's like the fanbase are becoming dumber by Feaster-osmosis.

get your facts straight. Smid was suggested by the Oilers hockeybuzz writer.

I don't want any of Edmonton's pile of "loser accustomed" garbage. Unless it's Eberle. That's the only attractive piece Edmonton possesses that would be good for this team.
Yes, their pick could be pretty high, 8-12th probably. But if we can link up with another team on the edge of playoffs that can also dish us a top end prospect with promise as well as their 1st, then that's better. Even if the pick is a bit lower than EDM's you can look at packaging it with the PIT pick to get a really boss pick.

If that oilers first round pick gets the Flames Nichushkin to go with the prized young center I hope they draft, I am all for it. If you can't get Nichushkin, go for Ristolainen.

There is no incentive for Edmonton to trade the #1 overall pick for Jay Bouwmeester. They'd just draft Jones or should trade it for a Carlson or Alzner. The chances of these two teams involving a #1 dman and a lottery pick will happen when hell freezes over.

Great that I have my own fact checker but I didn't make any comments on who started it. I've been reading threads on here and hfboards both commenting on this rumor and there are Flames fans saying the Flames should do it which was what I commented on.

The Oilers pick is probably going to be in the 4-6 range this year. I think it makes sense for them to flip that pick for immediate help and try to get over this basement dwelling hump.
Mind you, getting the biggest loser in the league might not even help all that much. I don't doubt his loser status doesn't bring his value down some, even though he's been much better this year than last.
