Flames will potentially have tons of cap in a year where teams are looking to unload...also should have lots of picks/prospects IF they play their cards right.

Iggy is the emotional one but there are far bigger deals to be made

Cap space should be used to acquire bad contracts from teams needing to unload. It's time we start getting 2nd's for Kotalik's.

With the cap going down, teams might be under the gun to unload some players they normally wouldn't. Should definitely take advantage of this situation.

Iginla is a slow starter, it hasn't hit the halfway point in the season for him yet. He will soon get back on a 30 goal pace, and will dominate in the playoffs. Only crappy thing is it wont be with the Flames

Yeah, I'm thinking cap space is no longer going to be an issue with the Flames and I hope it isn't for a long time. I want us to be one of those teams where our players with ELCs are collecting 60 points a season.

Barring us signing some superstar there really is no reason why we should be a cap team.

My guess is the Flames and Iginla knew negotiating a trade with one team wouldn't net you much, so they tried to include other teams as well. This meant Jarome had to make a list even if his destination of choice was apparently Pittsburgh all along. This allowed the Flames to try and get a better deal even if the plan all along might have been to trade him to the Penguins.

Boston saying they had a deal done might have helped the Flames even more, as the Penguins might have offered a bit more.

We really don't know.

Does anyone remember the last time the Flames traded a player for a 1st round pick? (Not including the Tanguay for Habs 1st which was in concert with our 1st for Cammalleri.)

I think the only way Feaster could have did it differently is if he bluffed and said that the return was too low and that we were going to keep Iginla and try to negotiate an extention. Then drag it out until the last day and hope Pittsburgh upped their offer. It would have been a big risk though if Pittsburgh didn't come back.

Personally, I would have been fine with that approach even if it backfired.

I worry that Feaster's reputation is that he is a pushover and I'm afraid that GMs are just always going to assume they can lowball him every time. If it affects the return for more of our assets, then it would have been worth taking a stand on Iginla IMO.

I don't disagree, just because it is Iginla I would believe he could play hardball and grab a bit better package come deadline. Of course maybe it already had backfired with losing out on Morrow.

But at the same time, Iginla should only be the first domino to fall for the Flames as they near this deadline. If moving him means more time to focus on the some of the other assets this deadline, it might be worth it simply to not have the Iginla distraction. Especially if they do move Bouwmeester who should have more value. And now that Iginla's out of the picture and the Penguins are looking better everyday, maybe some of these consolation wingers in Cammalleri, Tanguay or even Stempniak start to look prettier to teams desperate to make some type of impact. Feaster still has time to redeem himself this deadline, wouldn't necessarily hold my breath, but it's a chance.

Agreed, this would have sufficed. Yup, I wonder if he even tried? Feaster should have said,

"Alright, a conditional pick and it's a done deal!" (2nd, 3rd or 4th in either '13 or '14 based on playoff games played or points or signing)

They didn't need him, but they wanted him. He didn't need them, but he wanted to play there. Feaster had if not the upper hand but at least a strong/equitable negotiating position with Shero. It was not unreasonable to have expected at least one top NHL prospect to come along with this trade instead of either one of the two college players. I have a feeling they just all wanted to have it signed and done with.
