He is still a heart and soul player and plays with a physical edge. That is a plus. The question is can he fit in now that he is losing a step? I think he would fit in better with Malkin. He seems to be able to adjust the speed of his game a little better to suit his line mates than Crosby.

I was saying from the start of this talk that it was a key pick up at the right price. No picks beyond next year, no key roster player and no top prospect like Despres or Bennett.
Ray pulled off what I think was a no-brainer to make this team better. Kudos to him for making it happen.
I think he is a better version of what we got with Guerin, which was huge for us. The best part is that no roster player was given up and Shero was clear the new players should expect to fill any role and they are ok with that. If anyone's not keeping up, we always have the Dupuis' of the team ready to play some up-tempo shifts on the top lines.

Can't agree with that. The GM still has to try and get the best proposals together for Iggy to pick his team. Just because Iggy picked Pitt does not mean that there were not 2 other teams veying for his services. Feaster should never have settled on any of the trade proposals at this time to present to Iggy.
Our GM got played by all teams involved and no matter who Iggy had picked, Feaster was getting robbed.

Draft Pick

Like it or not, this is big business - that proved itself in spades Oct - Jan.
I assume (hope) this situation was foreseen and managed. Tricky part for Feaster would have been how to ensure competitive tension in the process without pissing off the player you have to work with or turning the season into a circus prematurely.
Maybe it was always going to be one team, maybe it turned out that way. Either way, I don't blame Iginla/Meehan for playing their hand - but Feaster ended up in a corner and that should be unacceptable at this level. Recurring one-offs are a sign of someone that isn't capable not unlucky.

I love how practically everyone on this board became psychic and they are able to know what each party was thinking, what happened away from the view of the public and what the future will hold for the Flames.

That is probably a fair comparison, but it also makes me think of what type of stupid nickname they will give Iginla (Guerin was "Daddy G" or something stupid). Knowing Pen fans, I am expecting J-Dawg or something like that.

I don't feel sorry for Feaster and company one bit. They dithered around and built an absolute crap team with no legit center to play with Iginla, and despite that Iggy remained loyal and did every thing he could to try and win with Calgary. This management group rode the Iggy train into the ground, I'm very happy that Iginla finally said enough is enough, and forced the Flames to deal him to a team where he has a good chance to win a Cup.

I think the "Iggy has lost a step" is getting pretty overblown. The guy still has a few good years on him. He looked tired carrying the team in Calgary. I'm predicting he's going to show what he can do out in the East, and a lot of people will be surprised at how much Iginla still has left. Hope he has a playoff for the ages, and prove all his detractors wrong.

People are judging the trade based on these three factors:
1) Seller's market with the shortened season
2) Value of other players traded at the deadline within the last few years
3) Prices already paid this season
Something doesn't add up and according to this, the Flames got Fleeceastered.

I actually kind of feel for Feaster, he got thrown into this mess of a team that had little to no assets outside of an aging Iginla and was told to keep trying to push for the playoff by ownership when a rebuild was the clear direction.
This is on Sutter, King, and Edwards in my opinion. Sutter for his poor drafting throughout his tenure and terrible trades at the end of the tenure, and King/Edwards for refusing to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
It is due to the poor management of those three that we are in this position today.

I am still in complete shock. JI has been the leader of the Flames for how long? We get him for a 1st & change. Same with Morrow. How the hell does Shero pull this off? Boston has to one big fat chunk of pi$$ed off about now.

Yeah I mean great on Shero for making the Pens the most attractive option, but this is Iginla more than anyone else. And the arena will be nuts when he comes out. So pumped.

I might be in the minority here, but I hope the Penguins falter and we get a higher draft pick. Iginla is a former Flame now. Gotta cheer on what's best for my favorite team, not my favorite player.
Iggy can win his cup next year when he re-signs with another team. The Pens fans smugness is truly a piss-off.

The sellers market aspect (if that is even the case) doesn't really apply here since Iginla specified only 4 teams. That changes the supply and demand component a lot.
I know we all love Iginla, but that essentially diminished the return. Like I mentioned earlier, he didn't Sundin us, but it was close... and he had every right to do it.

I agree, to me it 90% falls on management. But I don't feel sorry for Feaster either, he let himself be a puppet, I presume to save his job. I have a hard time respecting that honestly. I know a job is a job...but still. Clearly last year Feaster was very frustrated and knew that change was badly needed, then backed away from that stance literally overnight.
So now Jay is overseeing exactly what he said he didn't want to be a part of, a rebuild.

My brain agrees with you, but my heart pushes that completely out of the way. Nothing this hockey season would be sweeter for me than to see Iggy win a Cup in Pittsburgh.

Frankly, I'm happier with the return for Iginla than I was with Phaneuf's return. I feel that with the contract situation and context of the trade, we got market value for Iggy.
|
the only reason this trade is better than Phaneuf's is because we don't know how it will turn out yet. we may get an awesome player with the pick, the two college kids may be a big surprise. with the Phaneuf return there were no unknowns, we knew exactly what was coming back and it was all hot garbage
god Sutter was an idiot his last few years as GM

Was he? D. Sutter is without a doubt one of the smartest hockey guys I have ever seen. Yet somehow he turned into a moron as GM? I'd say more likely he was continually pressured to "win now" and that forced him into deals he would never normally do if he was taken the long view and being patient. Pure speculation yes, but it fits.

If the leak about the Boston trade came from inside the organization, heads should role.
