With O'Reilly we may not have gotten a top 10 pick for starters. Nor is it written in stone somewhere that with us he'd have been our 2nd line centre. Also his contract was for 5.5 cap hit not 6.5.
|
Isn't his qualifying offer 6.5 unless you let him walk in 2yrs? The rest is explanatory if you read it. Making a 2nd line talent a first liner doesn't change the Flames predicament of needing a true 1st line center though. I am sure he would be on our first line but that don't make him a true 1st line center. He hasn't even hit 20 goals yet. Maybe he amounts to more but it looks like a hell of a gamble and over payment when we can just keep our pick in a good draft and get a guy on an elc.

How would that work with Van, PHX, LA and ANA in their division like we will have next yr. You can get away with it in the east but you cant in the west and specifically our new realigned div coming up.

Not saying it's a good, strategy, just answering his question of is there any teams that were built small and not aggressive that were actually successful. The 09-10 Canadiens fit that bill.

love reading these armchair G.M. comments like they could even come close to running an N.H.L. club. He's been our G.M. less than 2 years, give him a chance.

So they should hire Brian Burke then.

I think fans have been more than fair. We've become the laughing stock of the league since he became GM.
You could argue we already were prior to, but he certainly pushed us over that hump!

1. Hire Burke as President of Hockey Ops
2. Feaster does UFA signings
3. Burke does trades
4. Profit

No. Fans don't owe him a chance. Maybe if you posted this when he was hired, but now it's quite the opposite, he has to give us a reason to not be fataing terrified of what he's going to do next.

This works for trades/UFA's but who re-signs the RFA's.
Neither Burke or Feaster have been overly successful at that.
Edit: On second thought maybe Ken King, that Glencross re-signing is probably the best value on the team.

Although I'd personally be happy to see Burke President of Hockey Ops I'm not sure I'd say Burke gets a free pass on all his trades.
Regardless of stats I'd take Seguin Hamilton and Boston wins that trade over Kessel Toronto.
However, if we look strictly at overall trades as we can't win them all or loose them all Burke typically comes out ahead rather than not on trades.
Just have the hockey operations department work as a team for crying out loud is all I'd hope for if it means a Stanley Cup. I don't care if Burke is hired to do magic tricks over the noon hour for the owners so they leave the hockey operations department alone. Whatever, needs to happen make it happen.

yeah, no doubt about it ... big win for Boston. They also got another prospect through that trade I believe ... either Spooner or Knight, not sure right now. But it could have been even worse for the Leafs - at least Kessel became a two-time all-star for them.

Anyone that critiques games are basically armchair coaches too.
These are professionals that are well compensated for their positions. I guess because we aren't mayors or premiers or prime ministers, we can't criticize them either right?

I think we were a laughing stock before then. The Phanuef trade, Rangers deal, Jokinen signing were panned much more than anything Feaster has done

The 2009-10 Canadians had 32 fighting majors....
All 6 of their d-men were bigger and for the most part tougher than the Flames big tough D-man Gio.
Hal Gill was playing 20 minutes a game and in the playoff run Subban played 20 minutes a game along with Georges..... ie they had a tougher guy on the ice ALL the time than the Flames ever have.
Moen, Moore and max Lapiere Tom Pyatt all played more than 12 minutes a game.
The 2009-10 Canadiens could have run this years version on the Flames clear out of the saddledome.
Glencross Gio and Iginla are the only Flames that have significant grit that play more than 10 minutes a game.
Gio and Bouwmeester are the only Flames D-men that tip the scales at over 200 lbs......
Why is Baertschi the Minors???? There are no linemates/teammates to physically provide him cover.
I like all the Flames skilled guys...Cammalleri, Hudler, Tanguay, Backlund, Cervenka.... They would all do better if they were one of 2 or 3 smaller skilled guys.
They have to "rely" on Stempniak and Stajan to play big......
If you were an opposing coach getting ready to play the Flames... what game plan would you come up with and how often would you run the Flames goalie per period.

Dude, even you know those are all 4th line guys and it just depends on how much the coach likes to play his 4th line. The only regular (40 games or more) that averaged under 10 minutes was D'Agostini. Don't skew the stats in your favour. I would argue that Jackman, Begin, and McGrattan (or even Comeau if you really want to get down to it) all play a tougher game than those guys.
The Pittsburgh Penguins have fought 12 times all year. That puts them 22nd in the league. Doesn't seem to be hurting their chances at all. Don't like that? Chicago has fought 14 times. They seem to be doing just fine thank you. You know who has fought 2nd most? Columbus. Boy they are just lighting the league up aren't they? Fighting doesn't mean anything other than the type of team you are trying to win with. Detroit hasn't fought for years and they've been arguably the most successful franchise for 20 years. It's an old way of thinking. Yes, the Flames could have a little more piss & vinegar once in a while, but a lack of fighting shouldn't stop them from winning games.
Other team fighting stats from 2009-2010:
Montreal ranked 25th in fights.
Detroit Red Wings: Dead last.
3rd overall in fighting you ask??? That was the Calgary Flames, and we didn't even make the friggin playoffs that year.
Other stats you are skewing: Defenceman weight??? of all things...
Wideman=200 lbs
Sarich=207
Babchuk=200
Butler=196...are you really worried about 4 pounds?
Smith=197
The only guy that is undersized even a little is Brodie at 182 lbs. and he's been arguably one of our best defenders this year.
The only logical problem you point out is a whole line of undersized guys, such as Tanguay, Cammalleri, and Hudler. Don't know if that line has ever been out there.
Glencross/Stajan/Stempniak
Tanguay/Cammalleri/ Iginla
Comeau/Backlund/Hudler
McGrattan/Begin/Jackman
This has been our lineup for the most part of late. At least one physical winger on every line...next!
That's it. I'm done.

Sure these are professionals but all the armchair GMs here are screaming for Feaster to do something, what would you like him to do? I'm sure he's trying to get us a #1 centerman he's not an idiot, he's surrounded himself with good hockey people. But to come on and just say that he should do something with no explanation, explain what trade he should make, tell us what big signing is out there just waiting for him to make, cause I'm sure he'd like to know too. Where is this team with the big centre we want just itching to send him here? It's one thing to bitch about the guy but tell us what you would do if you were in his place, and to say "I'd sign a #1 centre" ,yea where you going to get him?

I'm sure anyone on these boards could run this team straight into the ground. We aren't there yet.
