So, without reading the whole thread, I'm sure someone would have covered my viewpoint on the subject.
On a related note, I used to browse reddit with most of the default subreddits. Complete waste of time. As sort of a new years resolution, I threw out all the stupid subreddits (like funny, pics, atheism), and added some useful ones like science, askscience, lifehacks, youshouldknow, loseit).
I now find that I waste a lot less time looking at memes, and more time learning new things and improving myself. So, if you browse without an account, or haven't really customized the default subreddits, just a suggestion to give it shot.

He made a strong case that certain unmoderated subreddits are gross, a point to which nobody in this thread has disagreed. He then used that as a blanket condemnation of the entire site. People are disagreeing with him because it's trivially easy to avoid the scummy parts and only read areas that are informative/funny/pleasant/etc.
One can take his criticism of reddit and apply it to the entire Internet. It's an incredible source of information and entertainment, but it's not without a seedy underbelly. Thankfully, you don't need to experience the worst of it to enjoy the best.

People on this forum seem to apply the blanket condemnation all the time until it applies to one of their little pet loves. As a private enterprise, Reddit is actually gross.
The Internet is just the free market. Reddit is one of the firms that utilize the market to allow some pretty gross stuff. Anyone who disagrees with me on Flanagan's right to say what he wants in an academic setting, and uses Reddit is a disgusting hypocrite.

The Reddit admins gave violentacrez an award and were basically besties with him before he was exposed and they had to cut ties. It's all pretty gross.
The misogyny is really bad too, but it's bad at Calpuck too, as well as almost every message board ever. So that's not really a reddit thing. It's more of what happens when there's light moderation.
