The Flames have gotten in at least one players head before the game. Not saying that's the reason but the fact that they are in Colorado does raise the chance of Feaster talking to Agents who may be there

Avs are forced to choose what to do cause in 2 years they have big RFAs to resign, Duschene and Landeskog wholl want the same money as RoR. Plus their goalie is an RFA. Plus stasny, Downie and McGinn are UFAs.

Not worried about it.

I can't see Stajan being bought out. He's earning his pay cheque this year, and I suspect there would be teams willing to take on his contract if Feaster did want to move him.
Cammalleri is almost guaranteed to be bought out if he can't be traded. Kipper is also an option because it would cost virtually nothing and clear almost $6 million off the cap.

If the Flames qualify ROR in 2 years, yes, it will cost 6.5M per season.
But you DON'T HAVE TO QUALIFY AN RFA. You can simply re-sign players. The Flames will NOT be forced to pay ROR 6.5M.
Remember how it would have cost $2.5M to qualify Comeau this summer? How come that never happened?
I hope ROR plays to the quality of a $6.5M player in 2 years time, so I'd have no issue giving him that.
|
True, but if that's the thinking then it's a no brainer for Colorado to match.

Matt Moulson is Top 10 in NHL scoring and he never played anywhere during the lockout. ROR is younger and much better than him. I'm not too worried.

Maybe the development of Jon Gudreau facilitated this deal.
Do the Flames feel he has first round ability?

Good luck with that.
He'll have all the leverage. The Flames will have to offer him a QO because they gave up a first and third for 100 games of his play. If they don't he can walk and sign with whoever he wants.
If I were a Flames fan I'd be begging for the Avalanche to match this. $6.8 a season for O'Reilly is a terrible contract that will screw up their salary structure for years.
|
He was trying to hold out for $4M+ which most people thought was a tad high but could be negotiated down a bit. Colorado just played hard ball since they have a principle to stick to.
If O'Reilly does demand a lot more, we'll just ship him out since he's still a RFA for compensation in some form. He doesn't necessarily have all the leverage. And as mentioned, if he does play well then that's a problem I would love to have on this team.

He also led the league in Takeaways with 101 and had only 34 giveaways. That's huge.

What do you expect the flames to have offered him and also forced the avs to potentially let him walk then?
You have to overpay - at least Feaster did it on the short term and he can hopefully get him locked up on a better deal.

Relative to the draft position it is though. If one was a fan who thought this was a top 5 pick team before (like me) I just fail to see how big of an impact he will make in the final 27 games. I would imagine it really does not have a huge impact on where the Flames will pick at the end of the day.
I was just talking about his impact vs. where we draft. If he puts us over the top and makes a Stanley Cup favourite (like say if St. Louis signed him) then it is a 26th overall pick and a 86th overall pick. The value of this trade basically rides on the ability of this team to perform when it actually counts.

It seems unlikely that Feaster fired a fax off to O'Reilly's agent this morning. This has probably been in the works for a while - especially if the Canucks were also making offers - and it just got signed today. The player likely assessed his options for a few days before deciding to sign.

Don't think they'll match, enough poison pillishness in there + incentives (possibility of lottery pick) to make them not bite on matching... of course I didn't think the Preds would match Weber either so what do I know.

Brilliant move by the Flames and one I didn't think they'd be willing to do. Very little downside here outside of the long shot the Flames pick top 3 in the draft. A Selke candidate is easily worth a 1st and a 3rd.
BOOM! Well done, Mr. Feaster.

If the Flames pay a 1st, a 3rd and 10 million for 100 games of ROR, without getting any assets in return, that might go down as one of the worst franchise crippling moves in history.

They don't have to wait the 7 days, but if they are taking the picks it makes sense for them to wait as long as possible. No sense in doing the Flames any favors.

It's a pretty easy decision for the Avs to take the picks. ROR has made it very clear he doesn't want to be there and the Avs have made it very clear they're not going to pay him $5 million. Plus, it's not like you're letting him walk for a 20-30 1st round pick; there's a very real chance that pick ends up in the top 10. (IMO it ends up being somewhere between 12 and 15, which I think would be a good trade for the Flames)
I would be very confused if they matched.

You do realize he hasn't played one game in the NHL this year yet, right?
