I'm a fan. O'Reilly is a really good player, he's a center and he's only 21 years old.
|
This. It'll be an interesting problem assuming the Avs don't match down the road but considering how Iggy is either with a much smaller contract or gone in some way, it's doable for us.
Huge gamble. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens.

Decent risk for me. Sure we lose a first but we get a player whose already going to help the team now and going forward and is young. His potential is just up there with any high picks.
Gut feeling is we are going to move out assets to get some picks back now.

Down the middle, O'Reilly/Backlund/Horak is a pretty nice trio of young centers.

Just think, we could have drafted him instead of Erixon!

Real head scratcher.

We have no picks in the first 3 rounds and one of those picks was very likely (in the minds of those who think we should trade Iggy and Kipper) a franchise calibre player.
Unless we get another 1st, I see this as a "win now" move that if it doesn't work out (and imo this team needs a lot more then a player who at this point is a "decent" center) leaves us with a young player with solid potential at least. Smart move by Feaster who is probably being pressured to win now but knows it's futile.
I'd still prefer a complete dismantle.
Again if we get a 1st, I'll change my tune.

I'm ok with this either way. I would love for it to happen just to have something for this season but if it doesn't happen this team better sell, sell, sell.
He is an upgrade over anything we have now so that is a huge plus. Slot him with Hudler and Sven and that is great line.

I am disappointed. I was hoping we could re-build through the draft.

You guys are missing the point if you're just looking at the points.

What? I thought it was going to be 5 over 5 of something like that. Seems weird for 2 years. I dunno. Initial reaction was good move, I'm just wondering.

lol in 3 seasons as a 21 year old. No, he is not Crosby, but a 50+ pt season is impressive at his age.

It's all just a carefully crafted plan. Avs match, making them a better team, increasing the chances the Flames pick is really good. lol

I'm not sure if Avs will match right away. Did some digging and last contract they offered was 2 years 7 mill. ROR wanted 2 years 10 mill (which is what Flames are offering). Flames are really forcing their hand with this one.

I don't mind the concept in theory. However it does seem a little worrisome in another way. It shows to me that the Flames are going to continually go for the playoffs even though they are in the most major of needs of rebuilding. Not being a loser is fine if you've actually got a shot to make some damage. The Flames do not have the tools in the shed to do that any more. Seems like a bit of a sideways move, despite my liking of ROR.

This gives you an NHL quality player, who has something to prove, for a 1st and 3rd, which with Calgary's drafting record, would probably end up being non-players for us anyway.
|
We don't like trading draft picks for rentals and scrubs and has beens. Trading a first for a 21 year old first line center falls under 'acceptable risk'

They can't. If they match he cannot be traded for 365 days.
Meaning he can't be traded until after next years trade deadline. Then his qualifying offer will be 6.5 million to retain his RFA rights.
Quite frankly as someone who has not been one that thinks we should try and get O'Reilly this offer sheet is sheer brilliance on the part of Feaster. I really think the Avs won't match.

Stupid mistake. He is not a $6.5MM player. Avs will take the picks and do better with a UFA in the summer for that money.
