I don't understand everyone flipping out about how this doesn't help a rebuild. The guy is 22 years old and has a 55 point season under his belt. Yeah if they don't match we lose our 1st and 3rd but we dont even know where this team will be drafting. Maybe this move puts us into a playoff spot. I dont see this team finishing in the bottom 5, they're too good. They will likely be a 20-16th place team even without O'Rielly.
This is a solid move, the only way this would turn out to be a bad move is if our 1st rounder turned out to be a top 5 pick.
At the moment I would rather have a 22yr old centre who got 55 points last season then the "hope" that we get a player that even makes it into the NHL and registers a 55 point season.
Who knows, maybe him and Baertschi work out well together...

I'm thinking we won't find out until a week from now, Avs will probably drag this out until the end.

If the Flames finish out of the top ten, which let's be honest they probably will, it's a great move.

The more I look at this the more I wonder. If the Aves match... Thanks Flames you helped a divisional rival sign a good player. If they don't, I'm not surges he's worth 6.5 million...

Clearification: Is it 2013 1st round pick, or 2014?

A 1st and a 3rd, plus that enormous cap hit is a lot to pay for a 2nd line centre even if he is young.

Alienate? The Avs are probably overjoyed.

Feaster is an idiot. Why on earth would he pull that move. We had a chance to nab a Seth Jones or a Mackinnon and now there's chance that Colorado gets one of them instead of us. I'm sorry, but ROR is not the answer to this team. He's basically a crappier Patrice Bergeron. Colorado isn't going to match and this team is headed for mediocrity for the next 5 years with Feaster leading this team.

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie If COL matches the offer, COL cannot trade O'Reilly for one calendar year from day it matches the offer.
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie Structure of deal designed to deter COL. That includes getting a $2.5M signing bonus now and a really low salary ($1M) rest of season.
Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger A very aggressive move by the Flames. However, other GM's suggest Colorado could have fetched more than a 1st and 3rd via trade.
The question about whether Avs match or not depends on how much they stick to their principles on what Salary of RFA without arbitratraion rights should be
|
Ouch i forgot about the 7 day match. The flames could be out of the playoff hunt by then. They better start winning now!!!!

Plus they can't trade him for a year. So not only is it a player who doesn't want to be there, it's a contract they don't want to pay and can't move.

Well Feaster certainly went out and addressed the Centre position.
Is it a good move? I don't know, but at least he did something.
O'Reilly is a great young player. 22 years old, 236 NHL games played already, coming off a season where he won 52.6% of faceoffs and scored 18 goals, 55 points.

If they're going to eventually let him walk, then yes, it's a great move. No sense in allowing a division rival to get one of your players any sooner than absolutely necessary.

Considering Ottawa traded David Runblad (1st round pick) and a second for Kyle Turris and O'Reilly looks to be a much better player than Turris, this isn't that bad.

Or maybe it's some insane plan by Feaster to entice the Avs to take the 1st, then go on an undefeated tear for the rest of the year
