Going by the standings now, it would likely be the 8th pick. That can obviously change between now and the end of the season.

If it ends up being a top 4 (MacKinnon, Jones, Barkov, Drouin), then we'll be a laughing stock. This is a huge gamble. We are as close to a top 4 pick right now as we are to just squeaking into the playoffs.

if it's a top 5, then I don't like the move.

If it's 6-10 - it's wait and see.

If it's 10 or higher - great move.

Couldn't care less about the money - $5M cap hit isn't huge for a top 6 C

He's 22 and he's a UFA in 3 years with a QO of $6+M. This could be a move for the future or it could blow up in the Flames' face.

This will be a fun seven days of meltdowns here assuming the Avs wait us out (which I assume they will do).

This board is so Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. On one hand, we don't want to trade for draft picks, because we lose a roster player for an unproven comodity, especially with our draft record - lets get a proven roster player back instead.
We don't want to trade our prospects because they're good and we don't want to give them up.

This gives you an NHL quality player, who has something to prove, for a 1st and 3rd, which with Calgary's drafting record, would probably end up being non-players for us anyway.

A very aggressive move by the Flames. However, other GM's suggest Colorado could have fetched more than a 1st and 3rd via trade.

A wait and see-move? If we are not in the play off race come april 3, we trade Iginla, and get back some high draft picks?

Wonder which contenders that has traded themself to high draftpicks...

Really not getting how some people on here are so short sighted.

We have the worst pool of centres in the NHL, our prospects included.

We go after one of the best young defensive centres in the NHL, 21 years old coming off a 50 point season... and there are comments crying about "win now" + "no plan" + sacrificing the future.

Real head scratcher.

Bob McKenzie@TSNBobMcKenzie. If COL matches the offer, COL cannot trade O'Reilly for one calendar year from day it matches the offer.

ROR is a Langkow type player to me. Great 2-way center. Can play 1st line if needed but is really better suited as a above average 2nd line guy who will get you 55pts year over year. As many have pointed out, value of this totally depends where the Flames pick lands. If it is top 6 then i really don't like the idea...much worse and i can live with the risk.

Big improvement at center for sure but not a franchise type guy,

Intriguing and scary

ROR is 21 y/o, so I don't mind giving up the 1st+3rd.... I hope to GOD its not a top 5 pick though, I will be pissed it its a top 3 pick....

BUT the $6.5M QO in a few years scares me

Intriguing but scary....

Exactly. Essentially by making this offer sheet he IS your first round pick this year and one of the building blocks for now AND the future.

If this goes through we go into a really deep draft with no picks in top 90. I'm aware that can change quickly but to waste it on a guy like ROR who has had one good season and demanded to get paid like a superstar is foolish. Guess we are more foolish to pay him $6.5 million next year.

Either this is a move that signals the rebuild and we are ready to trade Iggy/Kipper to get our first rounder back or this comes back to bite us in the ass and we are deeper in the hole than before. I would say there are better players available in this years draft than ROR from what I've read but then again I'm no scout.

Too much hype for one solid 50point season. What did he do to deserve such money? Stastny was ppg in his rookie season and what a crap is he now with huge contract. I'm fine with being aggressive in chasing franchise center but what makes you believe this is our guy?

I honestly don't think there is a chance that O'Reilly is ever going to be worth a 6.5 million QO.
