Abbotsford is an extremely hard working team, but let's face it.. they lack high end offensive talent (outside of Sven). They are currently a middle of pack offensive team that relies upon an extremely structured system to produce victories.

I think your expectations heading into the season were a little far fetched.
Probably... but its been so long since I've had expectations...

Hockey East has announced #Flames prospect Jon Gillies is the Defensive Player of Week. He stopped 58 of 60 shots & posted 1 shutout.

Kreider only has 10 points in 16 games, Schwartz only has 8 in 18 games, Silfverberg has 9 in 16, Zibanejad has 7 in 16. Before his last game, Couturier had something like 12 points in 14 games (now has 15 in 15, but he's also playing with Brayden Schenn). The AHL is also as tough as it's been since 04/05.

All it takes is a couple multi-point games and he's right back where he was. The Heat are a low scoring team and particularly have been struggling to score goals lately. The whole team is in a bit of a funk offensively right now. They'll have their game soon.

I'm not worried about how Sven has been scoring lately. Almost all of Sven's line mates are guys that will make good journeyman AHLers. No one on the Heat have the raw talent the way Sven does. Half of the Barons team are bonafide NHLers. Well, bonafide Oilers at least. I'm sure Sven would be racking up way more points if the Heat had the offensive punch that OKC has.

Boston College still ranked #1 in NCAA Division 1: http://www.uscho.com/rankings/

Providence starting to get some notice, falling just outside the top 20.

Looking at straight scoring numbers is deceiving. Yes Sven only has 16 points, but the Heat have only 50 gals as a team. Sven has been apart of 31% of team goals, in comparison RNH has been apart of 32% of Oklahoma City's goals. Looks a little less concerning now doesn't it?

I also would take most OKC stats with a grain of salt, they literally have an NHL teams 1st line as well as 1 if not 2 of their top 4 defensemen (I am not sure where Marincin is on their depth chart)

Bottom line is, it's his first year in the pros. The jump from CHL to AHL is a big one. I'm happy with his production.

There have been 8 weekly segments/honors so far this season in Hockey East and Gillies has been given an award in 4 of those weeks. Pretty solid season so far.

Especially considering he's a freshman. Wow.

Ortio is still top-5 in all major goalie stats, and HIFK is still a pretty bad team. If you look at their lineup, they're surprisingly old and talentless. In a paper today, Esa Tikkanen criticises the fact they're trying to rely on over-the-hill skaters instead of giving young players a chance to do what the old geezers have been unable to manage.

Apparently, Granlund will be promoted to the first line in tonight's game. We'll see how the team develops. For sure they're looking to change things. They just signed someone named Mathieu Perreault (from Washington) but they must be planning more changes. Might be good for Granlund.

Ortio's stats: 92,23 gaa (5th in the league), 2,16 gaa (4th in the league), 3 shutouts (tied for 1st), 9 wins (tied for 4th). Pretty good season for him. About as good as anyone could have hoped after last one.

Is Granlund playing centre?

No. If he's really on the first line, he's centered by Joakim Eriksson. Essentially replacing Ville Peltonen.

Looking at the lineup, it's like the most stone-handed team ever. And the coach is so green that he relies too much on the "tried and true" ozzy osbournes. Apparently they're a very unexciting team this year, and HIFK fans don't have much patience for that.

Man, except for maybe Brett Carson, is there anyone in the Flames' organization who needs the lockout to end as much as Leland Irving?

With Ramo likely to come over next season, as well as Ortio and Brossoit putting up good numbers this year and likely looking for spots in Abbotsford next season, not to mention Gillies having a great freshman year, Irving has to be a little concerned about his place in the organization.

Ok.. that explains why 3 players are ahead of him in the scoring stats list.

What about the other 22 from other teams? Just saying.

I expected him to be higher up on the list.... particularly when people were expecting him to make the jump right into the NHL this year.

Anyway, HIFK lost in OT 3-2. Ortio with 38 saves, no points for Granlund whose season is beginning to look a little unproductive.

what an understatement given that he is currently behind (good) AHLers like Taylor and Brust, just a few months after backing up Kipper ... that must be frustrating. Who knows, if Kipper re-signs and Ramo comes over, Irving might be done in Calgary.

Thanks for the Finland update, Henry Fool - much appreciated. I really don't know what to think about Granlund, I guess we'll see once he comes over. Glad to see that Ortio is doing so well on a bad team. Going back to Finland to get ice-time was the right move.

For me, the most impressive goalie in the Flames' system so far this season has been Gillies. I didn't expect him to step in so easily at Providence and post fantastic numbers like that. I'm not an NCAA expert when it comes to goaltenders, but for me, it was already impressive that he was immediately penciled in as the #1 goaltender for the Friars. The fact that he constantly gets these honours and is a candidate for Team USA for the WJC is amazing ... you have to give credit to the scouts, they have done a very good job in stockpiling good goalie prospects lately.

Wow, are you ever blinded by ignorance. Maybe you should actually watch some games before judging a players performance by their point production?

Baertschi is in 2nd in terms of rookie forwards point production and only 1 point behind the leading rookie forward, who also has a game in hand of Baertschi. He is nearly point-per-game in his first pro season so far, where he has been getting incredibly bad bounces and his linemates haven't been producing off of fantastic passes, and your expecting more? Talk about far-fetched expectations.

Being a point-per-game player, or even a near point-per-game player, in the AHL is extremely rare for rookies to achieve (unless your name is Cory Conacher, in which case, nevermind).

Baertschi's doing damn well. A whole season with Ward and he'll know the ins and outs of how to compete against the best of the best.
