If you have two iOS devices (iPhone, iPad etc.) there are baby monitor apps for under $10. Problem is they don't record, so you'd have to catch them and take a screen shot.

Get a couple of maricopa harvester ants, regarded as one of the most poisonous bugs in the world. Invite the family over. Put the ants into your child's piggy bank.

You'll know the culprit when one of your family members dies or screams his/her head off, for these bites are extremely painful.

Do not allow these ants loose in the house. In case they should escape, make sure you don't have a male and a female, or you'll have bigger problems.

Other than your kids were any other children there? I wouldn't put it past another kid to steal the money.

When I was a kid my cousin ate all the chocolates out of my advent calendar and hid the empty box under a chair. Kids a jerks.

Yup, I lost it at "buy a tricycle."

Growing up my sister would eat all the Halloween candy (or any candy really) and put the wrappings under my dresser.

Have you considered some sort of 'money lineup?'

I agree with this- that you cannot rule out your own kids. So this is what I would do- have the 9 year old call up the person you suspect, and ask "Uncle X, I have a question to ask- and I'm asking you because I trust you. Did you see anybody go into my room the other day? Somebody stole the money from my piggy bank!" (Then have the kid break down into tears.)

If the uncle did it- it will make him feel guilty as hell. If the kid did it, he won't be able to pull it off.

Having the kid call up the dinner guests is actually brilliant. No accusations, just "did you see anyone go into my room? All the money from my piggy bank went missing!"

That's a pretty good idea except for the fact the uncle and the nine year old don't have much of a relationship. We don't think it's one of the adults but one of the kids. Could be mine. The hard part about this is that we just don't know. If it was my money I wouldn't care too much, just be more careful and move on.

I know they have to grow up sometime but explaining to a 7 year old that members of the family could steal from you and can't be trusted outright RGMG!

Your 7 yr old has his own wallet? Did he check his money clip?

Have you investigated his safety deposit box? Maybe hes converted his cash into GICs or bonds?

Based on the description in the OP, it sounds like the money was mostly change. You'd think someone would have noticed the jingling as the thief walked around.

I figured that was the case. I will. Might take a few weeks for the update.

I handle all his paper money (Bank Account).

The wallet holds his change for buying french fries or chips after skating lessons.

$20 composed of small change weighs a fair bit. From now on I recommend weighing all visitors on the way in and out of your house.

Just sink a scale under the front door mat.

But how could you account for the weight of beer and cheesecake?
