I idolized him growing up. I wanted to be just like him...didn't quite make it to the moon, but I've had my fair share of adventures. RIP Mr. Armstrong

I will briefly come out of retirement for this.
Neil Armstrong walked on the moon 5 years before I was born. When I was 3 years old, 8 years after he was earths representative, in the greatest feat humanity has ever accomplished, I was given this children's book about astronauts by my parents, and with a ton of pictures of Neil Armstrong in it. One being the famous salute photo.
My parents read me that book 100's of times, and it had the consistency of cloth by the time I outgrew it, and my dad had it memorized. That book taught me to read, and Neil Armstrong became my hero, and inspired my interest in astronomy, a hobby I still enjoy immensely to this day. When people asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I would say. I wanna be Neil Armstrong.
This is one of those few famous people deaths that makes me truly sad. But calling him famous is an understatement. The man was an icon. Today I lost my childhood hero. And the world lost a great, brave hero, who embarked on a mission with his crew mates into the then unknown, that could have easily ended in tragedy.
Hundreds of years from now, when we finally look back on the people that truly inspired millions of people, his name will be right at the top of the list of true real life icons, that shaped the imaginations of countless generations.
RIP Commander Armstrong.

A great tweet I read today:
"Nobody born since 1935 has walked on the moon."
Now it's not exactly referencing Mr. Armstrong, but it's quite the stat - our youngest astronaut to have walked on the moon is 78.

Second that recommendation. It is "the" book for anybody interested in immersing themselves in one of if not the most exciting and incredible eras of mankind.
Chaikin has really done his homework and his writing style is sublime. There's a sequence in the book where he, using the actual radio transcripts, describes Buzz and Neil skimming the surface of the moon on manual control, fuel running out and alarms going off, searching for a suitable landing site. Unbelievable! Blew my mind!
There's also a film called For All Mankind by Al Reinert which is a must see. He sifted through hundreds of hours of NASA Footage of the Apollo missions, took the best, enhanced it, coupled it to an amazing soundtrack by Brian Eno and made the best documentary I have ever seen.
