Pavelec has taken the rains over from Khabibibulin as the the new DUI posterchild for the NHL.
Both were goalies for the Jets and both are from eastern Europe.

If Pavelec were to screw up similarly a second time, you'd think they would try to trade him instead and try to recoup some sort of future asset.

I was under the impression that they couldnt 'terminate' a contract, but only suspend it.

The attitude towards drinking and driving is very different outside Canada/US. It's definitely much more tolerated and acceptable to have a few drinks and drive yourself home. I'm not saying it's okay, I'm just stating that it is different in many countries.

The same thing applies to having a glass of wine while pregnant. In many countries in Europe, it's completely acceptable to have a glass of wine with dinner while many people gasp at the thought in N. America. Just different cultural norms.

Unacceptable behaviour.

Hopefully he is held fully accountable, I have zero lenience for drunk drivers, and yes, that includes myself as an idiotic 18-year old all those (18 years ago, holy crap I'm getting old) years ago.

Thankfully, I made it through without hurting anyone, but there's no denying that my actions were inexcusable.

It is one or the other...can't be both.

No panic here, Olli easily adjusts to playing goalie as well.

He wasn't charged for DUI. Just disorderly intoxication and resisting arrest.

Wake up people. Drinking and driving is a bad part of society no matter what job you have or how much money you make. Why you need to be reminded of Pelle Lindburgh when you can read about 1 or 2 drinking and driving accidents per week in any major newspaper across the country.

When your right bombed you make bad decisions whether you are a professional athlete or a public works employee. His actions were brought out to light because of his profession.

Glad I wasn't famous when I blew my .24 would have lit up the press.

There is no excuse for it no matter who you are. Just be glad no one was hurt and hopefully he and others learn something from this.

PRAGUE, Czech Republic -- Winnipeg Jets goaltender Ondrej Pavelec has been banned from driving for 20 months in his native Czech Republic after being found guilty of drunk driving.

The 24-year-old Pavelec also received a six-month suspended prison sentence for causing a traffic accident May 26 in his hometown of Kladno, west of the capital Prague.

Pavelec hit a car with his BMW. There were no injuries.
I assume this won't affect his ability to work in North America.

I didn't know this happened before he signed his contract; he left that little detail of his life out of contract discussions:

Quote:
Goalie Ondrej Pavelec pleaded guilty to drunk driving less than two weeks before he finalized a new five-year contract worth nearly $20 million with the Winnipeg Jets.

But neither he nor his agent breathed a word of his conviction, or his car crash nearly three weeks earlier, at the negotiating table.

That not-so-little omission might be as troubling to the Jets as what Pavelec actually did.

“The organization was deeply disappointed to learn of this information (Monday) and is fully aware of the seriousness of this matter,” read a Jets statement, Tuesday. “We will determine our course of action once we have the chance to meet and discuss with Ondrej in person, which we expect to do at the earliest possible opportunity.”

so MPI, Manitobas public insurance company has stated that Pavs cant drive in Manitoba for the 2 years either. Being convicted of drunk driving elsewhere in the world means you cant drive in Manitoba. Good law/regulation.
