All of the above strategy got executed. Following sound strategy will end up being successful most times. Guys in Columbus / NYI don't appear to have much of a homogeneous strategy.
Edmonton's strategy is to suck ass. Glad ours seems to have everyone on board and that we're following it.

To play Devils advocate on the "they had and stratagy, and traded down to get the guy they wanted anyway" arguement.
I beleive the same could be said for the D Sutter regime and they sucked a drafting. I seem to remember Backlund being an example of the exact same senario, the Flames traded with Stl to go down 5 spots because they knew he would be available, did they not?

Yes, if you notice, every organization is saying the same thing about their prospects right now "he was our guy" "potential to blah blah blah".
We're in wait and see mode, unfortunately, it's 3-5 years we need to wait.

in 48 pages this pay have been posted already but if not it's a good read on the pick

Second, they took a risk on the right type of player. Every scouting report I have read on Jankowski praises every part of his game: his shot, skating, compete-level, two-way game, vision, puckhandling, and passing – it’s all there. The only knocks on his game are his weight, as he evidently grew 6 inches in the last year and hasn’t filled out his frame yet, and the fact that he played in a Canadian high school league, where the competition is significantly lower than in major junior or the USHL. None of the knocks against him are related to his ability, just to his circumstances, which is an indication that he might be worth the risk.

the bad ...

There is plenty of risk, of course. That’s what going off the board is all about. The Flames were clearly enamoured with Jankowski, to the point that they may have become blind to his downsides. Their scouts loved him when they saw him, but they saw him surrounded by weaker competition that was nowhere near the level that the other prospects faced. Perhaps he was seeing passing lanes so well because the passing lanes were so large that they were impossible to miss. Perhaps he skated circles around his opponents because his opponents were lousy skaters. Perhaps he looked good defensively because of how bad his opponents were offensively.

I say what's the harm in this. At worst, we end up with another Chucko or Pelech. I'd rather we take this risk than draft a Nystrom, Irving, or even Backlund. Those type of players are a dime a dozen in the NHL. I'm tired of the Flames always playing it safe. I think it's refreshing they're going for the high risk high reward type picks.

There's lots of first rounds who were a month or less away from being in next year's draft. The whole age thing is way overblown.

I thought it was only 2 - 4 years.

Backlund wasn't a safe pick either. He fell cause injuries in his draft year.

Hmm, I guess that's true. I just think, with the law of averages, at some point this has to swing back in Calgary's favour eventually right? I mean, even the crappy Oilers with their even worse draft record than the Flames managed to get Eberle (who went in the later half of the first round, but is arguably better than any of their three first overall picks).

I'd say ending up with another Pelech or Chucko would be a disaster. We really can't waste picks for a while.

I don't believe in luck.... the problem is either drafting or development, I'm betting on the latter. I really have no idea as a fan though, the whole thing is a black box to me; all I hope for is they pick guys they think can be top line forward, top pairing D as I think depth can always be signed. Jankowski fits that catagory, so I'm optimistic for now and hope it turns out.

The only problem I have with this pick is that Jankowski doesn't have the confidence to go straight into college. His college coach said that the scholarship is waiting for him if he wants to attend this year. (Heard interview on the NHL Network on the second draft day) I guess some of his confidence issue could be put to his lack of size as he was growing up. Anyways a year in the USHL plus a year or two in college should be his aim or time table to turning pro.

I think it's a good idea. He's been playing in an inferior league and now will be playing with top players in his age group. In college he would be playing men, which is a big step up from where he was. No need to make him crap his pants.

For a guy who is supposedly good enough to be top 5 in next years draft I would hope that playing in the NCAA wouldn't make him crap his pants.

It has nothing to do with confidence and everything to do with understanding his development. Are you honesty suggesting that players that go the USHL route lack confidence, they all had scholarships waiting for them too.

How many guys go to the USHL after being drafted though? Most guys who get drafted from the USHL are there because they're not old enough for NCAA and they can still maintain their university eligibility. Once they hit 18 they usually go to college.

This speaks to the fact Jankowski is a late bloomer and really busted on the scene in the past year. It's the risk and why he is considered a project. Just like the CHL I don't think most teams knew who he was two years ago.
The next two years are going to be very interesting. His year in the USHL and his first year in college.

If you listen to any of his interviews, it will become abundantly clear to you that Jankowski most certainly does not want for confidence. His decision to post-pone college in favour of a year in the USHL must be due to other factors. As MMF noted, his very slight build—owing to the insane growth spurt he just experienced—and coupled with the fact that he has never benefitted from any elite-level coaching are the reasons he will spend a year in Dubuque.
