Yup, this is the thing... Westgate is having lots of issues on it's own, without even having to mention the Coyotes. Close friend of mine in Phoenix comments that Westgate is a white elephant, but no one wants to admit it. She said a number of businesses/restaurants have closed. This is anecdotal of course, but I think there is a problem there even if the Coyotes survive another year.

Goldwater is seeking an Order delaying vote Friday morning.
http://t.co/TMzqBhG1
Tomorrow morning the City of Glendale plans to consider what is estimated to be a $425 million arena management deal for Jobing.com Arena. Arizona’s Open Meetings Law and multiple court orders require the city to make public all documents related to the proposed contract at least 24 hours before a Council vote is taken, which it has not done. The 100-page deal released on Monday refers to a number of exhibits that are central to analyzing the impact of the deal on Glendale’s finances, which the city must make public. Per respecting Open Meetings Law requirements, the Goldwater Institute will be requesting a temporary restraining order to prevent the Glendale City Council from voting on the contract Friday morning.

So correct me if I am wrong, haven't followed much of this, but is the expected vote supposedly 4-3 in favour? Or is it a wildcard at this point

Used to be 5-2, but Mayor Scruggs moved to No. Clark would seemingly vote Yes for any deal.

I think the city would say yes just so they can get some form of revenue from the arena rather than leaving it without any action pretty much all year.

I can't understand how staying in Phoenix is beneficial to the NHL.

4-2 because one of the councillors who would normally vote against can't make it due to illness.

How can you possibly think that the vote could go any way but in favour? Are you not following this story?

There are many cities that would embrace, and support this franchise. Winnipeg, deserved a team, Quebec City deserves a team, Hamilton Deserves a team. Having an NHL franchise is the ultimate priveledge as a hockey fan, and regardless of the crappy product the last few years, I am still incredibly grateful, I can say my home town, is in the most elite club of hockey fandom. We are an NHL city. We probably care more here about the Roughnecks, than the citizens of Phoenix care about the Coyotes.
The Phoenix coyotes are a slap in the face to NHL fans. That a city that can't even put what some TOWNS put in an arena for WHL games, at higher prices, cheapens the NHL, and is an insult to the game.
I have said it before, you could put the Coyotes in the Red Deer Centrium, and generate more revenue, have a full building every single night, and probably find a way with creative pricing to have a break even team if they were a cap floor setup. The fact this has been allowed to go on so long, is the biggest joke ever in the NHL.
Phoenix is a great sports town, unfortunately hockey just isn't considered a sport to them. Give the team to a city that cares. And it doesn't have to be Canadian in my eyes. I still think Vegas, would be the ultimate stop for them. No pro sports teams, thousands of Canadian tourists to draw off... heck, I would make the Las Vegas Bandits my second team in a heartbeat.

See, I understand the argument against Phoenix, and I actually agree with it. The market is very unlikely to ever be profitable. However, making complete bullcrap up doesn't lend strength to your argument. In truth, it only hurts it.
There isn't a single junior team in the entire CHL that matches Phoenix's announced attendance. And hell, if you wanted to argue that the Coyotes really only average half of what they claim, you're looking at only Calgary and Vancouver from the WHL that can top that. Maybe Spokane. And maybe Edmonton, though they had tons of games with less than 3000 fans in the door, so I doubt it.

COG's analysis in support of saving the Coyotes:
http://www.glendaleaz.com/documents/...obingArena.pdf
Regardless of the discount rate and assumptions used, the Arizona Hockey proposal produced lower costs for the City of Glendale than if the Coyotes moved from Glendale and left the arena without a hockey team. The Arizona Hockey proposal is also more advantageous to the City than other proposals considered over the past year.
On a net present value basis and a 6.5% discount rate, the Arizona Hockey proposal costs the City approximately $17.8 million less over 20 years than if the team vacates the arena and moves from Glendale. The net payment made by the City of Glendale is estimated to total $324 million. With a present value and 6.5% discount rate, payments by the City should be $203.7 million. The City’s estimated revenues over the 20 year period total $79.5 million. With present value and a 6.5% discount rate, the revenues compute to $44.9 million for the duration of the 20 year deal.
• Arizona Hockey’s average annual cost to the City using a 6.5% discount rate is $7.9 million. The average annual cost to the City if the team vacates the arena is $8.8 million.
The worst of all possible scenarios for Glendale would be for the hockey team to leave. The viability of Westgate rests on the use of the Arena for hockey events, which represent 59% of total events at the facility today. The loss of the team would have harmful effects on the retail and restaurant uses which depend on game day revenues to sustain their operations during non-event times.

Alvarez has a "lower body injury".
Available soon?
Mayor Labeaume begins to wonder if the Coyotes will soon be available for Quebec. He could not avoid talking about it yesterday, before more than a hundred delegates gathered in New York for the convention of smart cities.
The mayor later confessed taken by surprise when the president of the Intelligent Community Forum, Zacharilla Louis, has questioned whether "hockey" would soon return to Quebec.
"First, we will build a new arena, and I do not know, maybe the Coyotes will be available in a few weeks," replied the mayor Labeaume, before giggling, like all delegates.
Preferring not to add too much, "I love Gary Bettman," said Mr. Labeaume, recalling that he should be careful while he stays in the city remains the NHL commissioner.
Like what the interest for the Coyotes is far from gone, Mr. Labeaume disclosed that he had exchanged with the CEO of Quebecor, Péladeau yesterday, a few messages about the actions of the Goldwater Institute .

I don't think Vegas is the way to go. Yes there are no other professional teams, but there are many many other substitutes competing for your dollars. Music, Magic, Fights, Theme parks, shopping. There are many things people go to Vegas to do, and watch hockey is not likely to be one of them.
Plus they have a rotary population. Not many people actually LIVE in Vegas and the ones that do are likely working long hours at a casino. People go to Vegas for 4 or 5 days and generaly have ways planned out of spending their money (usually involving losing it on purpose). And I don't by the snowbirds argument. Half of Calgary has places in Phoenix and it doesn't seem to be working for them.
