No, I think that's just standard procedure for a Harley.
What's that? You've got a Harley?

Anyone have experience with buying a new battery? Looks like mine is toast, been charging it for a couple days and got the bike to fire, but it died almost immediately (I was on the gas a little while idling, but it died). Tried push starting and again I got smoked, but wouldn't fire. I'd prefer not to get an OEM or from blackfoot as I'm sure they'll charge me $200.
Anyone have a place to get one for cheaper?

This is the battery you need. The yuasa part number is YT9B-BS. I have used yuasa batteries before and they are a good replacement for OEM batts. Best bet locally for price is too call around to a couple autoparts stores rather than the dealership and see what price they can give. Like you said dealerships, especially blackfoot jack things up big time. I found this one for 80$ including shipping if you don't mind waiting a bit for it to be shipped.

Be careful that you're not using a trickle charger designed for a car, otherwise you'll boil the battery. Most car trickle chargers will run at 10A, you want a charger that runs at 2A.
You should really look into a battery tender for when you store the bike during the winter.
I was able to get a batter for $40 for my Honda Hurricane at NAPA (not sure if they have those stores up in canada). Either way, some automotive parts stores will also carry batteries for powersports (motorcycles, boats, jet ski's etc).

Maybe a dumb question, but who has been out already? A lot of bikes out up here but there is a ton of sand still on the roads. I'm not ready to risk it yet.

I've seen at least one bike out every month this year, crazy.
Yes, too early for me as well, still too much sand for sure. People are asking for trouble.

Sand and gravel are hazards year round. It is cold tires and road surfaces that are very dangerous at this time of year. Moreso with high performance bikes where improper throttle control and braking can result in traction problems.

I'm using a 2A battery charger and finally got it going again and this time kept it going. Went for a 10 minute drive, put some gas into it (started again), then came home. I'll leave the trickle charger off it tonight to see if it starts tomorrow. If it starts tomorrow hopefully I'll be good to go.

There is a lot more sand and gravel this time of the year, particularly at intersections.

Which often does not get cleaned until mid July unfortunately. In many instances improper street cleaning just spreads debris to the middle of the road in which it remains year round.
To which my point was stated that sand and gravel present hazards year round.
The unseen enemy is... cold tires especially on corners.
Take a good look at a performance street tire and it certainly is not the tread that gives you traction but it is the stickyness of the compound that provides grip.
I'm not disagreeing with you, I am just trying to heighten awareness to new riders.
People ... Please ride safe and remember the cages are not looking out for you at the best of times, let alone now, so early in the riding season.
Cheers

I know this is a little off topic but Moto season is comming soon and if people are interested I will be doing atleast 1 ride during the weekdays at Maclean Creek after work. Being that daylight is precious rides start around 5:30-6:00. These will not be driving down the quad trail or logging road type rides it will be tight single track minus transfer sections. If this is your riding style and your more of a B Or A Class rider and not a total newb (due to daylight and patience issues) are interested shoot me a PM.

This statement is mostly true, for those grippy tires to "grip" they need to be warmed up and often times can't get the their proper operating temperature in cooler temperatures. This can be alleviated by using a tire with a higher silica content compound such as Dunlop Roadsmarts or Michelin Pilot Road rather than the normal set of Pilot Powers or Q2's. The added bonus is these tires last around twice as long (I'll get usually get almost 10k miles out of a set).
On my bike I run the Dunlop Roadsmarts all year and my track wheels run Michelin Pilot Power 2ct's (After these wear out I'm going to switch over to the Pure's).

I've bought batteries for a couple of different bikes at Canadian Tire.
