It is this competition to be on the starting team that has always made Germany so dominant in friendlies.

Players are not willing to even take a small, inconsequential, friendly lightly because they know if they don't perform they will lose their spot in the squad.
Competition for spots and Low's willingness to cut vets in favour of younger players hungry for their spot is a big part of Germany's recipe for success.

Look at the last little while, Low cut Klose in favour of Gomez. A couple years ago Gomez couldnt hit the broadside of a barn, but this year hes probably the most prolific striker in the world.

They are definitely a fun team to watch. The Dutch didnt live up to their billing. Sneijder did absolutely nothing all game and I think Neuer had to save one shot that came right at him.

That's it. After ten years of waiting, the Republic of Ireland have qualified for a major international competition - the crowd are in raptures, the celebrations are raucous and joyful. Stephen Ward opened the scoring tonight, before Konstantin Vassiljev cancelled it out with a long-range shot, but at the end of the day the damage was done by that magnificent four goal win in Tallinn.

Robbie Keane, Republic of Ireland captain: "It’s a great night for everyone, for the players and the fans – a night that we’ll never forget. The team spirit has got us through this campaign, and full credit to everyone in this group. This is what football is all about, moments like this."

Hoping and praying Bento doesn't implement a defensive shell for second half. They have to force the issue and get the next goal.

I for one am happy to see this. Its been long overdue and I'm looking forward to watching Ireland at the Euro Cup.

Hey, they qualified ahead of Portugal, they must be a European superpower now!

Hm, I didnt see that, must have had something to do with the sudden onset of narcolepsy that game induced.

I just noticed it here because its on youtube, its a closeup and it directly related to a goal.

Was just looking at the potential pots and realized again why I love the Euros more than the World cup

these are just guesses at this point because coefficients can change but based off last time and factoring a few group winners gaining points...

Pot A
Poland
Ukraine
Spain
Netherlands

Pot B
Germany
Italy
England
France

Pot C
Portugal
Croatia
Russia
Greece

Pot D
Denmark
Sweden
Ireland
Czech Republic

there should be 4 great groups, no cupcakes like at the WC

Yeah, they did it to Ronaldo when he was standing over a couple free kicks.

man how annoying is Nigel Reid. He written this game off about 10 times already.

Of course it's not over yet, stop being so shocked!
