Noticed this morning the alarm comes through the phone speaker even if the headphones are plugged in. Has that always been the case?

I'm fairly certain no. It may have been as long ago as iOS 3, but I remember sleeping in on a trip because I'd fallen asleep with my headphones in, they fell out in the night, so no alarm.

No, the speaker has always played the alarm even with the headphones in. I've been using it as my alarm for 4 years this way. I listen to podcasts every night while falling asleep with ear buds.

edit: nm. I thought the ringer for the phone doesn't use the speaker with earphones plugged in, but I just tested again and it does.

My brothers screen cracked and the Apple store replaced it no questions asked. When my screen cracked on my blackberry it was such a hassle and I ended up paying as well. Apple destroys blackberry in every aspect. I feel stupid for owning a blackberry for so long.

I'm far from an Apple fan boy, but I received a lot of flak from friends when I first got the iPhone 3 years ago. Blackberry is better at this and that, the iPhone isn't suitable for business, it is a toy, you're just being trendy, look - I've got BBM, blah, blah, blah. In three years, their tune has changed somewhat and most either have an iPhone or are considering one.

I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that at the time BB seemed to be near or as good as iphone in most respects and iphone was just a toy.

Now the only thing I like BB better for is email (which I don't use) and texting. The only reason I prefer it to texting is that I still think that touchscreen keyboards suck. I love having a physical keyboard. I've had a touch for 2 or 3 years and the keyboard still pisses me off rather frequently.

Iphone and even touch are all around life devices. They are far better for pretty much anything except IMO texting and that is only because of the keyboard.

I had a Palm Treo back in the day with a "real" keyboard. I agree that the actual buttons are much better for typing anything substantial.

Agreed. I've had an ipod touch for a while too and I will never get used to the touch keyboard. The blackberry's keyboard might be the only thing I prefer to an iphone and that will likely never change.

I mentioned this over in the OT forum but I might as well ask here.

Is there any way to transfer vids from my ipod touch to my PC? Do I always have to email or upload to youtube? I'm talking videos that I take.

Why don't they transfer when I sync? Seems weird.

Same with photos. I can't just take pics and sync them to my PC.

Is there an app for this? Damn maybe this should be in the must have apps thread.

When you connect your iPod it shows up as a device in Windows. You can access the internal storage that holds the pictures and videos.

If you're on a Mac you can open Image Capture and it will let you pull of photos and videos. Why Apple doesn't advertise this more often baffles me as it's very useful. It's also just about the only way I can tell to easily get photos off your iPad that you put on using the camera connection kit.

I can type much faster on the touch screen. Also, I've been recently dictating emails and text messages. For me, Siri dictates emails so accurately that I can compose emails almost faster than I type.

Does anyone else's battery drain overnight while plugged in? I put it on to charge overnight and when I woke up it was 'full' at 95%. This is not just a one time occurrence. Regular iPhone 4.

I'm in your boat. I can't stand physical keyboards. They take up so much available area on a phone, and the ability to have different configurations is a massive bonus to me.

Speaking of keyboards (sort of), I was surprised to find that you can change your language to UK English, which is closer to Canadian English, but keep the US keyboard layout ($ instead of £ and €, for example). Being a staunch supporter of Canadian English, I would always cringe a little when words like colour, centre, etc. were either marked as being spelled incorrectly or auto corrected.

Maybe it bothers me more than others, but if you're looking to switch over to UK English, just go to keyboards, add UK English, remove US English. (Edit: and then you can select your keyboard layout on the same menu).

Handy 4S tip of the day:

I use grocerygadget to keep my grocery list for the week. Whenever I think of something I throw it into the app and it generally works perfectly. The problem is 90% of my list comes to me while I'm cooking, and often my hands are covered in something I'd rather not navigate a touch screen with. I always wished Siri could let me populate my grocery list, but she can't get into apps.

She does get into your reminders app though. I didn't realize you could make dedicated reminder lists and populate them with siri. I made a list called 'food' and as long as you say "Add eggs to my food list", it'll toss it in without prompting you to set a time or date. You can then share that list with your spouse so you have a running grocery list that you both can manipulate. At the end of the week before i go shopping I'll just manually go through my list and add it to my app (I have to do this as the app auto-sorts the list by grocery store section, and I'll never shop for food any other way.).

This is a nice tip but it's even easier for me with my iPhone 4. I just yell "Go buy me eggs woman" to my wife. Truly a buttonless solution.

PSA: iOS 5.0.1 is available now via iTunes, or via over-the-air update (Settings -> General -> Software Update)

Supposed to resolve multiple power issues, and also restores multitasking gestures to iPad 1 users, hooray for that.
