Got them back, not the same way I did with apps, but I went to iTunes, More, Purchased, All.

There will most likely be a lot of people standing in line at the Apple Stores, but I don't know if any of them will have any gongs with them.

Everything seemed fine on mine... until my husband updated his, and we now seem to have each others contacts on our phones in addition to our own... weird, since I never plugged into the computer he uses.
In iMessage all my "conversations" now have the phone number listed instead of the persons name, so I don't really know who is who. Anyone else have this? I can't seem to figure out how to change it...

This way you can keep trying it over and over until it goes through without downloading over and over.

I tried this with no luck. I'm getting error -34.

Thats how imessage works. Its cluttered with fail thats for sure. The even bigger kick in the pants is if you own two devices and they get all cross mixed with messages going to both devices but conversations not carrying across both devices.
I would be happier if iMessage could be uninstalled IMO.

iMessage works like it should on my iPhone. However getting the iMessages to sync across to my iPad seems to be a problem. I suspect I will have to tell people to imessage my apple id vs my phone number. Was hoping that would not be the case. I was hoping to set up iMessage so no matter how you iMessages me it showed up on both i devices. Too much to hope for I guess. Haha

Okay so if I have my phoned backed up on another computer, and then upgrade to iOS 5 on another comp, and it wiped out my phone, how do I restore it too original settings from previous backup on the correct cpu? Also if you select restore what password do you enter in there?

It seems to be working properly after I went to an earlier back up from today. Also I have a lot of music. Maybe I should look into the Rdio thing kermitology is always pimping on twitter.

My upgrade was incredibly long but actually quite problem free. 2 computers, 2 iPhones and an iPad took me late into the night but most of that was sitting around and waiting.
Cleansing my system of MobileMe was a bit of a terrifying experience but it all worked out. I just exported everything into a folder, logged out of MobileMe on my computer disabled all MobileMe accounts (leaving most everything blank) and then imported all the backups. iCloud picked them all up and fired them off to my other devices. It was scary but hitch-less.
I was quite concerned as my wife and I share an ID. When it came time to set up her iMessages I was a little freaked out as it would only let me select my own name (same with FaceTime). Turns out you can just create a second Apple ID and enter that for several of the services without signing you out of the master ID. This made things much easier.
Complaints:
- No gestures on iPad 1... I generally don't think Apple does things JUST to make you upgrade, but in this case I see no other reason for its omission.
- Location reminders not working on 3GS isn't something I care about as I'll be in a 4S by next week (hopefully), but it still sucks. Again I'm not sure why this would be left out. What's more annoying is that they didn't say it wasn't coming (same with above), which makes for a very unpleasant surprise. Poor form Apple.
- iMessages don't show on both devices. You can initiate from either, but incoming only goes to one, which doesn't make the experience very seamless.
All in all I'm very pleased. Some kinks to work out but considering the volume of data being moved I can't believe it's going as smoothly as it is.

The sharing of the apple ID scared my at first but like you said you can change it. Apples recommends you only use one apple ID BTW
The iMessage complaint you have is one I have but perhaps I was expecting too much from it.

Anyone else disappointed in the notification centre's features?
Don't get me wrong, its a nice feature that has long been needed, but coming from jailbroken lockscreen apps (LockInfo, etc), Apple's implementation is pretty weak. Virtually nothing can be customized, (I don't consider the options provided to really do anything).
Only the next day's calendar apps can be shown, many items only show in notification centre (not lockscreen). No ability at all to have lockscreen items (weather, stocks, calendar....hello?), can't read emails/delete, no ability to clear individual alerts within a single app, etc, etc.
More and more serious drawbacks are appearing the more I use the notification centre, which is sad, as I was hoping to be able to live without my jailbreak, but that doesn't appear to be the case. You'd think Apple would at least be able to emulate a fraction of the options available in jailbroken notification apps, since they've been out for years.....

Yeah I was hoping for something like that on the lockscreen, not a scroll down menu.

Upgraded my 3GS last night and it was painless overall.
Although it's not a huge jump in terms of functionality I'm pleased there's no performance hit on my older phone, that along with iCloud make it worth the upgrade. The improved camera app (hey a physical shutter button!) is great as well.
Overall a solid but not huge upgrade, at the least it kills my lust for an iPhone 4S, so I'll stick with my 3GS for one more year and upgrade next year after my contract is up.
