That episode was an amazing episode, it was right up with the one where Sisko shattered the Romulon Dominion alliance with the help Of Garack.
and Jake was a good background character who would throw in strong performances like the one in "Take me out to the Ball Game"
That is one of the best episodes of any tv show ever. DS9 was insanely underrated, especially anything after the dominion became involved. I hope that comes out on blu-ray because i can't watch space in SD.

Yeah, it was definitely season 1 and 2. I gave up on it then... maybe a bit too quickly. If most TNG fans seem to like DS9, then I would probably try it again.
I also tried to get into the most recent one with Scott Bakula. I thought it had potential, but the stories were so boring. Voyager? Don't even mention that crap.
I despised season 1-2 on DS9 as a TNG fan... Skipped them and started watching the show again season 3-7... it was fantastic from that point on.
Voyager was the biggest piece of crap and I still refuse to acknowledge Enterprise exists.

There were some crap episodes in DS9 season 1-2 but there were just as many bad episodes (or more) in season 1 and 2 of TNG. DS9 had some good Bajoran arcs in the early seasons, like with the civil war and issues with Kai Wynn as a metaphor of religious intolerance or cultures of ignorance, etc.
I remember watching the episode called Genesis which was just out in left field. The crew had deformed to primitive creatures. Worf was this killer beast running around destroying everything. Troi was some sort of frog. Riker was the Geico caveman.
I remember seeing that episode for the first time and wondering "if everyone is de-evolving, why isn't Data turning into a Vic-20?"

I think that's exactly it, re-doing all of them will be hugely expensive and they probably don't want to commit to doing all 178 or whatever episodes unless they KNOW they'll make money at it.
I don't think they'll be doing a big boxed set though, from what I understand it'll come out in chunks.
The effects would be weapons fire (that effect would be too small to blow up from 480 to 1080. I've tried and it looks like crap). I imagine the planets will be remade when enterprise orbits and shuttles. Those would all be shot on green screen in 1080 and the planets made individually. With a team of 10 Effects Editors it would take about a month per season to remake as most of the effects will be recycled. The effects are not as sophisticated as the CGI used in movies. However, making it sound like it will be as sophisticated will help boost sales.

You always have to have a special character that isn't vulnerable to Weird Alien Disease/Nebula/Anomaly/Device so he can save everyone else. That's a staple of the Star Trek franchise (and a lot of other sci-fi).
TOS: Spock, because he's a Vulcan
TNG: Data, because he's an android
Voyager: the Doctor, because he's a hologram (sometimes Seven, borg)
DS9: Odo, because he's made of liquid
DS9 reversed that though because Odo was vulnerable to a disease that normal people didn't get.
That wasn't unique to DS9. Spock, Data and the doctor were all affected by things that others were not in some episodes. The point is you need someone "special"with different vulnerabilities than the human(oid)s that can step in and save the day when something happens to them. Those characters have their own vulnerabilities that don't affect the humans as well, but them it's them that need saving, not the whole crew - 1.
The only episode I can think of were the whole crew was affected, including the special character, was that TNG episode were they all went around boning each other. Data scored with Tasha Yar, IIRC.
Wasn't that a continuation of an original Star Trek series episdoe where they caught the crazy from infected water drops?
it was less of a "continuation" and more like a "blatant rip-off", really. I think the producers wanted something familiar to entice fans of the original series into TNG.

How did Data get infected in that episode? I didn't get it when I was a kid.
