I can understand why many of the places noted are open. For the chain restaurants, quite often it is just that you know what you are going to get when you go there.

For example, look at BP's. I used to go there quite often because it was a convenient hang out after volleyball games. Especially when we got team discounts. Pitchers of beer were cheaper there than it was at most bars. I still go every once in a while and I do enjoy the Boston Brute & Cactus Cut Potatoes.

The same can be said for various other chains listed. Most have one or two things that I don't mind and even crave on occasion. When I have a sore throat, there is nothing I want more than McDonalds french fries. Salty, scratchy and warm.

Now Fort Richmond Plaza is something that surprises me that it is still open. It sounds like you are a little younger than me. When I went to FRC, we would eat at the Chicken Delight or the burger joint (Mug Restaurant? Tug Boat Restaurant?). Those are long gone. That mall seems to get a little worse every year.

I bought my washer dyer set from them on boxing day... below cost, I showed up thinking no way at about 4pm... they had four left...

What's that you say? I've been paying $11.95 for my calendars when I could have gone back to the mall two weeks later and only paid six bucks? I've been a calendar aficionado for about fifteen years now... I could have saved almost a hundred dollars if only I had been more strategic about my timing. Of course, I wouldn't have had any idea what day of the week Elvis' bday was on, but man, I could have saved six dollars a year by buying my calendar on the 15th of January.

I knew the guy that ran the Calgary locations years ago and he made gobs of money every Xmas. Calendars are a huge stocking stuff/cheap gift which is the bulk of the sales. Overhead is really low because they get killer rates on their rent, and their margins are very high. Low risk and high potential reward. The only crappy thing is he had to work his arse off every Xmas.

Wow. I remember when I was going to university in the mid 90's- and that mall looked like it was about to die then. For the burger place, was it the Burger King that became Pony Corral? They couldn't afford to change the sign so it was in the shape of the BK sign for years.

Now there was another burger place north of there on the same side of Pembina- it was like Havey's in that you picked your own toppings; but way better. The first one in the city was in the old Ponderosa building on Portage; by Unicity. Is that the burger place you are thinking of?

How about laundromats?

Don't understand who exactly goes there. Pretty much every complex or house has a washer/dryer, these days. Just not sure why I see so many these days. I guess it might be a decent place to pick up hot chicks, or firm porno's, but do people actually wash clothes there?

Btw, I used to live in Dalhousie and Northlands Mall was my main haunt (always preferred it over Market Mall). Do they still have the cheap theater there anymore? I doubt it since cheap theaters are near extinction, but I loved skipping school and seeing movies for a couple bucks every week.

The burger place I went to for lunch in high school was in the mall, across the aisle from Safeway. That was in the early 90s, just before the mall starting going downhill fast.

There was a Harveys a few blocks north on the west side of Pembina. A friend used to work there. I'd go hang out there on Friday night then played ball hockey with the staff in the parking lot after they closed.

I go there if I have something too dirty for my own washer. I like my front loader fine, but sometimes you just need a volume of water to get the job done. I have a second washer dryer hookup in my basement; I should have kept my old washer.

That being said, when I lived in an apartment I had a choice- use the community washer and dryer... which meant timing each load and hoping nobody else called "next" by putting their basket on the washer. The other option was to go down to the laundromat and get all my washing done in 90 minutes.

Its like Canadian tire. Whenever a guy needs an awesome random guy thing, you can bet its at either Radio Shack or Canadian Tire.

Oh yeah, I ate there a few times. They had some the most greasy chicken nuggets I've never seen.

Class of '92. Back then, the mall was just fine. The Safeway, Zellers and Shoppers were just like every other one in the city. And all the little shops were vibrant. Nothing much to rave about, but definitely a decent mall for the size. I don't know why it died so fast. And then when the Shoppers left, it really tanked.
