You could say Apple is valid in this discussion if value was part of a best/worst argument but value is a subjective thing depending on each person's wants and needs and buying power. This thread is more about reliability it seems anyway.

I hate that idea, resale value is based upon nothing other than opinion. Of course a mac has a higher resale, a vast majority of people believe mac's are the best invention ever. Its the same reason people flock to the Iphone regardless of all its downsides, its an image of "cool" and people love that.
I'll never understand the Mac hype, like someone else said, they are selling not just a product, but a lifestyle, and no thanks... but i dont need a bunch of stupid gizmos telling me how to live my life.

Any chance you can decide not to buy a product without acting like anyone who does is a moron?
Is it really that big of a deal to you that some people like to do things differently?
Just don't buy a Mac. Problem solved.

Well whatever it is, that "hype" and "opinion" will get me a much better return when I upgrade my computer. Assuming my normal upgrade cycle, the increased return more or less pays for the premium price. Throw in an excellent OS and design (might not be important to some, but I appreciate the aesthetic) and Macs have been the right choice for me. When I needed a notebook to use while traveling for work, the long battery life and the way it goes in and out sleep instantly really set the 13" Macbook Pro apart from the competitors.
There are some downsides, especially for those who like to tweak their computers or their OS a lot (I used to be one of them), but I've found them to be eminently reliable and customizable enough for my needs. Many will disagree, and that's fine; I don't really care what kind of computer someone else buys. That's why there are so many different kinds.

as someone who bought into the mac hype i do feel a bit "cheated".
do i like my iphone? sure, i think its great. the iphone 4 is the best phone ive had but i cant help but feel like theres lots of androids out there that id prefer. the biggest selling point, however, is that i like itunes. i like ipods. and having all of it in one device is very convenient.
back on topic... i imagine that having a mac is similar, should i buy one. i would feel great at 1st then realize its not the perfect product apple has made it out to be.
if you want a good laptop get an asus at memex for good price.. you'll be happy.

And to extend that analogy, us motorcyclists laugh our ass off at the Porsche guy who spent how much?!?! to have something that isn't even in the same league performance-wise. But they do look nice and the owner gets to enjoy a mutual fellatio club. Damn... it's uncanny.

I was looking at a new Lenovo Thinkpad. How have peoples experiences been? I am thinking of getting a cheapish one (Thinkpad) for school and buying a pimped out desktop for gaming.
Looking at this one: http://www.memoryexpress.com/Product...32617(ME).aspx

It's not about Apple, it includes Apple. Essentially, the thread is "what laptop should I not buy?" and Apple is included in that list.

Actually, I found Traditional Ale's post useful. Some folks here sure get critical.
I'm in the market for a new business laptop and am getting some good ideas here. It's helping me narrow down my options.
My first computer was an Acer a very long time ago, before some here were born. I hate to tell you how much I paid for it and what I got for my money. It was sort of like buying a bicycle 20-25 years ago for the same money you could get a Toyota RAV for today. Yeah, like that.
Since then I think every computer I've owned has been Dell, except for the iPad 2. No computer has ever failed on me. I keep use them for 4+ years on average then replace them. They eventually develp issues more than I'm capable of fixing with my limited skills. I figure it's not worth getting a tech guy in to deal with them, so I upgrade for a few hundred bucks. I keep some of them around and have six now. I give some of them away to people who might not be able to buy computers.
Gotta go and finish this thread to make my next buying decision.

Who cares about resale value? Does anyone resell a laptop? I keep my computers, my cars and my wife all the same - for a very, very long time. That's the best financial decision.

To the OP, I have that exact same HP HDX 16 laptop, and it's been hands-down the best one I ever had (on my 4th one in 10 years) . I've only had one problem*knock on wood* with it, and that was my HDD failing after 4 months. HP shipped me a new one and I swapped it myself .
I use it every day, basically running nonstop from 5-11 every night. I like to get three years out of my laptops, and this one convinced me that I should buy an HP again as it has worked much better than my old Toshibas.

Why would I keep around obsolete hardware that I don't use when I can sell it while it still has value and use the money for an upgrade? If I kept all my computers around until they died I'd still have a Pentium II machine wasting space. Hell, I'd still probably have my old 286.
I guess if you're fine using out of date hardware or hoarding unused computers your way is great. Personally I'd rather stay reasonably up to date and get money for my old computer rather than just have it take up space.

I was being sarcastic. I just get annoyed at the spec sheet / price comparisons. Are you buying a computer or a spec sheet?
It's like comparing cars on only horsepower, or cameras on only megapixels, or razors on how many blades they have. It's an easily consumable metric that doesn't address the only thing that matters: the user experience.

Apple stuff holds it value really well (too well, in my opinion, but that's secondary to the rest of this post).
Over at Ars Technica, they talk about the "Jade Plan". The idea is to keep yourself on the newest hardware, and under warranty, for only a couple hundred bucks a shot, by buying each new hardware release, and then selling your old one while it still commands a decent price on the used market.
When you look at the cost of used Macbook Pro's on Kijijii and whatnot, if you want to stay cutting edge, and want to stay under warranty, you can do it for a fairly minimal ongoing outlay, as long as you keep upgrading when new models comes out.
