To clarify it was my dad's company party (a company I spent a couple of summers working for during University), not my company party. They were held on the same night so naturally I went to the one with the open bar.

There seemed to be a direct correlation between position in the company and alcohol intake. Higher salary = more drinks!

My current work place has a nice Christmas dinner and awards/recognition ceremony that includes the staff and board members.

When I worked at Canadian Tire it was just one big boozefest. Oh the things that go on at those parties. I only went to one, it was enough to last a lifetime. People were rowdy and, in general, idiots. One of the managers punched out his wife. Some 22 year old tested the suspension on his truck with some 16 year old chick and it was somewhere around -30 outside... morons. A fight broke out between some of our staff and the staff of some grocery store who was having their Christmas party at the hall next door. Nobody lost their jobs, but a few people lost a lot of respect and dignity.

My companies Christmas parties are wide open.

Just a lot of mingling and drinking. The bar shuts down at midnight, and it seems the main rule is just make sure you can take care of yourself, and make sure you have a safe trip home.

The secret is to get drunk slower than everyone else. That way even though you are drunk throughout the night you aren't the embarassing guy.

The secret at an open bar. Drink beer and no shooters. That keeps you more sober than everyone else.

Christmas parties nowadays suck. We used to just get trashed and nobody gave a crap about who was drunk except to tell the funniest stories on the next workday. Now it's all "ooh what will the boss think? what will my co-workers think?"

I don't go to work Christmas parties. I see these people enough during the week when I am required to, I'm not going to spend my time off with them, too.

That's my contention too. If I'm off the clock, it's my time. Want my presence at a social event? Pay me time and a half.

And that's not coming from a perspective of being anti-social or not liking fellow co-workers.

Just rather have a bonus, or failing that, have the company contributing to charity on the employees' behalf.

For me, it's a bit of a mix of both of these. I get along with my co-workers well enough, but wouldn't really consider them friends. I have also learned from the past that I prefer to keep my work and my personal life very, very separate.

I went to a friend of mines last year. The company gave everyone a hotel room (Canmore), some drink tickets and a live band. It was quite fun to see these co-workers come together and just get lit up.. Some of the bashing I heard was unreal. Depending on how much you drink you should know your point of no return... Probably best to stay under that point.. No need for a blackout night ha
