Yet America has a vast number of literalist believers in the Bible.

This isn't targeted at people who would agree with what you just said. This is targeted at those that would say what you said is a lie from the devil and an attempt to lead people away from salvation.

If that is, indeed, interesting to you, I recommend The Evolution of God by Robert Wright.

It covers religion in general, but spends a great deal of time theorizing on the evolution of the Abrahamic religions from polytheistic to monotheistic and the development of the writing of the bible.

No, it'd be slowpitch, but I'd still throw a strike.

You know his name wasn't really Jesus Christ, Right?

Jesus is just the Greek translation of Yeshua, which translates from Hebrew to Joshua. But his name wasn't Josh Christ, Either, since his parents weren't Joseph and Mary Christ. So it's really not blasphemy to say "Jesus Christ", because it's not taking the right name in vain.

Isn't religion fun?

Bah! Kindle version not available in Canada!

Too bad. Consider my interest piqued.

I think the atheists who have given it some serious thought or have spent any time researching religion do. And any atheists who know people from the "allegory" majority would know too, so I'm not sure I agree with "most", but I'm sure some percentage don't.

I've certainly run into a lot of "they don't really believe that though do they?" among atheists and agnostics when beliefs like a 6000 year old earth come up, so the opposite exists as well.

And part of it is perception, an atheist may fully well understand that the majority of Christians view the flood as a myth, so when they give some reasons the flood is mythical, they aren't talking to that majority, because there's no disagreement. So does it just appear that they don't think that majority is there, and in fact it's just because they're focusing their discussion with someone else?

If you take the bible too serious - you're doing it wrong. Seriously - would people follow a medical document from 2000 years ago to treat someone? No. It's the same logic - they didn't know how to explain some things that we know now. Just like 2000 years from now they'll laugh at our sh1tty TVs and attempts to be 'advanced'

Times change - people change, but that doesn't mean the bible can't be used to help guide, not enforce, a set of moral beliefs.
