The Herald:

Witnesses in tears are giving statements to police.

I can't imagine. A Parents worst nightmare is right. Sounds like a lot of people are simply devestated.

A child as young as two or three should be nowhere near the edge of a platform. Not saying that the parents don't feel absolutely awful already, but how the hell do you let your three year old wander near the edge in the way of a moving train? Pathetic.

And then what? Fences on the side of every road?

You must not have kids, so I don't blame you for saying this, but I'm sure no parent would "let" their kid play by the edge of a moving train. Kids are fast, unpredictable and borderline ######ed much of the time. And as a parent, 100% attention is impossible 100% of the time.

Yah I understand that, but kids are, well, kids. They are very curious and oblivious to the dangers around them. It's sad that these type of accidents can be prevented, and most likely money is the only reason barriers are not being set up on these platforms. I understand it's not only a Calgary problem but actually almost everywhere with c-trains. Is it really that hard to come up with something safer?

Last year that girl pushed a kid into a train, and it would have been totally preventable if there was some sort of barrier.

Totally not saying this is the best option, but surely there can be something done to prevent these accidents.

Why not? Unless you have the belief that the only thing downtown are business people.

There are a lot of places you can take your kids downtown.

I don't have kids, but I can appreciate that they are VERY difficult to keep an eye on all of the time. I've got a seven year old little sister and an eight-month old little brother (he can't get out of sight yet but it won't be long).

For sure there are going to be some accidents and close calls as a parent, this just happens to be one of those close calls that unfortunately goes in the other direction.

I didn't mean to say that accidents like this should never happen, because that's just unrealistic, and there's always going to be one. But a c-train platform is quite literally the last place you want to take your eye off a three year old.

As a father of 2 young kids my heart goes out to the family of the little boy. Nothing and I mean nothing could be worse for a parent than this. I can't even fathom it.

Seconds after running away from his mother a young child apparently fell and was killed after being pinned between a C-train and the platform
The tragedy happened about noon in front of terrified and helpless witnesses who rushed to help the boy and comfort his screaming mother at the station at 7 Ave. and 3 St. S.W.
Am I the only one who had onions for lunch?

Reading this thread makes my stomach flop and required me to call home and see if the kids were ok and most importantly home. Becoming a parent has made me a nervous wreck.

From what I recall, over the last few years, there have been a lot more people who have been hit by the train at random corners than at the stations themselves.

So sure, you could put barriers at all the stations, but would that do much good? Probably not.
