Default Canada guaranteed the most gold medals in the 2010 Olympics

I know this is being talked about in the Gold! thread, but I think this deserves its own thread. As quoted by pewpew:

Gold medals left...

Men's Curling (CAN or NOR)
Men's Hockey (CAN or USA)
Men's 50km Cross Country

Canada will bring home the most gold medals in an Olympics for the first time EVER! And we will pass our medal haul for the Turin Olympics with 26 (pending a medal in the 50 km cross country, which I don't foresee happening). Congrats to all of our Olympic athletes for an incredible performance!

Guaranteed 26 by this count.

We are also first in the official Olympic standings as they count gold medals first in their criteria.

Here's the official standings.

Our men have also picked up the pace and now have 6 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze for 9 and soon to be 11 of our medals.

here's a better standings link showing us first. I never thought it possible but we will own the podium.

I'm still surprised VANOC and CTV have not altered their standing to match every other Olympic games in recent memory. They are all listed as country with the most golds in first.

Since they're the biggest media outlet that sorts by number of gold.

And that's official how exactly? The NY Times sorts by total.

I agree that the traditioanl method has been to sort by gold medals, but claiming the BBC source as official is kind of disingenuous. I don't think there is an official ranking actually.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_Su...cs_medal_table notice how it's listed, for example. It's an IOC thing

The best at 12 of them actually.

This is the problem with the winter olympics in the US, another reason for the blowhard segment of the population to act like jackasses when they have absolutely no idea what they are talking about. I listened to a guy go on and on about how an officials call in short track was garbage while at the same time he thought he was watching a relay when it was a 1500m race. I hate those people..

Well there we go, an official source it is then. Let's link to that, it prevents us from looking like mid-game rule changers (see USA in Beijing).

Technically, the IOC doesn't rank either way, though most of the world ranks using Golds as the primary determinant, with Silvers and Bronzes used as tiebreakers.

I don't give a s*** about official medal counts.

We have kicked ass, and I am proud of our country!

Let's top it off with a gold medal tomorrow and make sure that Vancouver 2010 is the best Olympics ever!

"I believe each country will highlight what suits it best. One country will say, 'Gold medals.' The other country will say, 'The total tally counts.' We take no position on that."
—IOC President Jacques Rogge

So, clearly, total number of golds is the best.

Well the blowhard segment (not calling you a blowhard, Nickerjones) can and will still gloat if Canada cannot win the hockey game Sunday. They will just say they beat us in the only sport that matters. Then they will go back to totally ignoring hockey again.
